    the problem with overlong motor mounting bolts is that you can damage(short) one or more windings, when you do that the motor is toast, kaput(been there, done that, bought the new motor).
    Still waiting for my boat to come in.it came in

      Rex, if that has occurred would the motor not work at all or just exhibit the behavior I described of running short distance and then cutting out? If I go ahead and buy a new motor should I bump up to a 10xl rather than a 9xl?

        Latest news. I ran it briefly today. So here it is, I pulled 134amps! I must admit it was freaking flying fast. The second lap it cut out. I don't think I damaged the ESC it is 120amp HV. I obviously need to tame down the motor or the prop. I am running a 9xl with an X442 prop. Could someone tell me what I should try? Maybe going to a different prop (suggest one) or a 10xl motor to calm things down a bit. I was running some 30c 11.1 volt Lipo's and the boat is an Oval Master 27 Carbon Fiber.

          WOW that is a lot of amps for your setup. Is the boat running real wet? Is the drivetrain nice and smooth.

            Yeah, it turns smooth and is not running wet. I ran this same boat 2 weeks ago all day with an SV27 motor and esc with no problems. Think the motor is bad??

              I think something is bad, you should be in the 85-95 amp range tops.

                I guess the only way to know is to order a new motor at this point. I will do this and see how it goes. I am going to try a 10xl since this is just for fun and I am not racing.

                  did you say you have another motor? can you try that one instead of buying a new one?
                  One time something like that happened to me with a motor which a accidentally shorted out by inserting screws that were too long... they touched the wires inside and that was enough to turn it into sheit. Another time it happened to me but it was the ESC that was faulty... and yet another time there was loose wire in one of the plugs... it worked exactly like you said... stuttering and that's why the motor was so hot... imagine a bunch of spikes in amps and voltage one after the other... that would generate heat in the best of the motors.
                  One more thing, after all this high temp issue with the cheap motors you may would want to replace it anyway, there is a good chance the magnets are shot... then the ESC could be the next in line due to the faulty magnets.
                  :::::::::::::::. It's NEVER fast enough! .:::::::::::::::

                    Thanks for the advice UB. I just got the new motor in from Steven today and I am going to get it set up and try it out. I would have tried the other sv27 motor I have, but the connectors are different so it would have been a bit of a hassle.
                    The more I think about it the more I think it may be this motor. At any rate we will know very soon. I will post an update after I get it set up.

                    UB, I just noticed you are in southern California. I used to live in H.B. and actually still have a rental house out there. Eventually, I will be moving back. Any good places to run a boat in that area that you know of?

                      Who needs sleep. Here it is 11pm on a work night and I have finished up dropping in the 10xl motor and getting everything in place. I just tweak'd the throttle a bit and noticed two things. Max amps were under 10amps compared to 30 before and the motor seemed to spin much more freely. Hopefully, I will have time after work to drop it in the local pond to see what happens. I also put on a new x440 prop.

                        So, I got the boat in the water today. The good news is the motor appears to have been part of the issue. The amp draw now was just 58amps with an x440 prop. The bad news is the boat still cut out at the other end of the pond. I am now thinking my last thing to try is simply putting some fresh batteries for the receiver. I am using a spektrum radio which has been reliable. My hope is that I have not somehow damaged the brand new very expensive ESC before ever having gotten any use out of it. Learning can be painful at times...
