    Water - Getting the shaft??

Got my new pursuit runnung - totally stock on series 7.4v packs. My boat has the stinger with the short shaft - after running for around 3 minutes I have been bringing it in for a checkup - running cool now that I changed 4mm bullets to ec5's. Even the motor does'nt get very warm. Speed control is cool as a cucumber. My problem is that with the short stinger shaft, I think water is following the shaft up into the boat - gets about an ounce every 4-5 minutes. Seems to spit out a lot of grease also - covers the stinger!! If I switch to the full length shaft, will the problem go away?? Am I doing something wrong?? Stock shaft shortened to allow teflon washer to ride tight against the stinger - maybe 1/16". originally there was a gap. Any Ideas??

Common problem with the stinger on the Pursuit letting in water, where the stinger bracket bolts to the hull the barrel part of the stinger has a gap of around 3/16" off of the transome. This scoops water into the stuffring tube, either fit some o rings between the stinger barrel & hull (i cut piece of 6mm silicon exhaust tube 3/16" long & fit that inbetween). This mod has been done countless times on this forum to great affect. You also need to put a short piece of silicon water tube on the motor end of the stuffing tube to seal, this also stops water ingress & stops the grease pumping into the boat.

You really shouldn't have shortened the shaft so there is no gap, when it winds up the flex contracts, you need the gap to avoid binding up the driveline.
The rule of thumb is a gap equal to the width of the flex cable.
Thats a good fix listed above for the leak, common problem with stingers.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

IM not sure, but i think if its a standard persuit, it probably came with a 2 peice flex

If its the stock 2 piece flex & stub you only need a small gap between the stinger end & teflon washer/dog as when the flex winds up & shortens it dosnt pull the dog against the stinger.

I always assume people swap out the two piece drive to make maintenance easier, I shouldn't do that! If it's the two piece shaft people are right about the gap. You only need it with a one piece shaft. The short shaft stinger kind of threw me, assumed it was a short stinger .
            Cheers

Yup, 2-piece shaft = rear solid, front towards motor = flex. Will be going to one piece during winter rebuild and finish paint & polish after shakedown. First boat in 20 years, so I'm a little new at this.

Why not put liner in stuffing tube down some and extend liner out of stuffing enough so grease does not fly all over. Now many years ago i used dremel cut off containers cut lenghtwise and placed over where cable exited the stuffing and left enough room for loosening coupler and tighting. This helped reduce grease from flying all over.--Where liner exits stuffing tube ; run liner up close to coupler and leaves room for small water line hose for retainer on cable incase coupler lets loose and you won't lose cable to Davey Jones Locker. These items work for me and never looked back and also a cleaner boat.
