    What clear coat to use?

Can anyone tell me what clear coat would be best for use on a Venom Segad's factory paint? I had to do some work on it and want to make sure I get what's best to clear over it. I had to repaint a small area but need to clear that and part of the original finish to blend the clear coats back together. I'm thinking it will be best to wet sand the whole boat and clear the whole thing for the best results. Is the Segad gelcoated? If so, as long and it's sanded down with 800 grit, will paint like an automotive clear or Krylon clear do the job?

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you have the equipment go with 2 part automotive clear, much, much tougher than any of the single part or spray can clears. Can also be buffed to a beautiful deep shine.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

I would contact the manufacturer because the wrong paint will cause the original paint to lift and you will have a big mess.

SAme here I'd do a test spot but I've sprayed the 2 part stuff over many kinds of paint with no issues, even some kind of water based acrylic art paint on a guitar with no issues.

At least do a couple of barrier coats first.

I would reccomend automotive paint, much more durable than krylon or any rattle can clear for that matter. You can spray autmotive clear on just about anything without issues, just not oil and grease. Ive sprayed it over enamel, laquer, gelcoat, watebase, plastic etc. As long as the surface is prepped properly and clean it will stick.

I would not try and spot repair with it though, you will get a much nicer cleaner job just scuffing the entire boat with a scotch brite, and clearing the entire boat again.

Also something to consider is bring the boat to a reputable body shop and let them clear it for you, that way you dont have to spend alot of money on materials and arent stuck with leftovers.

Just my 2 cents here, but I use U-Pol Clear#1.It comes in a rattle can and comes out with a nice thick clear.Do test a piece first though as It has done things to some of my model paints.

That's what I'm going to do. I've got the whole boat wet sanded with 800 grit and am ready for clear coat.

                      Thanks, for the advice.

So I just went to Advanced Auto to look at their automotive clear. I was going to get it but then I remembered a friend of mine told me that I should be careful about laquer clear coat cause he had experience with it lifting the paint. Is this the kind of paint you are saying you've had good luck with? The one with laquer in it?

Just found a local auto paint store that had some UPOL in stock and picked up a can.

                            Thanks again guys.

I personally would get real auto clear... not duplicolor etc from auto parts stores. If you can go to a real automotive paint shop or search online for upol clear in a can. A little more money for a non comparable difference. Ppg, omni, hok, etc etc will also be much better choices. The duplicolors etc just don't shine like they should and i wouldn't buy them again if they were $1.00......
