    PilotOnLine News posted this:

    "VIRGINIA BEACH

A man drowned Tuesday night in Lake Trashmore, an official said.

The man went in the lake about 8 p.m., apparently to try to retrieve a motorized toy boat that got stuck, said Bruce Nedelka, the Virginia Beach EMS division chief.

He went under and did not surface, Nedelka said. A friend tried to go in the water to save him, but was unsuccessful.

As of 11:30 p.m., authorities were still searching for the man’s body. His identity was not released. The lake is in Mount Trashmore Park. WVEC-TV was reporting this morning that the man's body was located and retrieved from the water shortly after 1 a.m.

The man’s friends saw him go under water, Nedelka said. The water is murky, the bottom is muddy and there’s a steep drop after about 20 feet, he said.

At least one friend tried to make a rescue as others called 911.

About 30 rescuers from boat and dive teams with EMS and the Beach fire and police departments went to the lake to search.

They searched the water with a sonar scanner that detects shapes in the water. A Beach police helicopter used an infrared sensor from the air."

Sorry to hear this. Every time I hear that someone swims after a boat to retrieve it, I cringe.

I was up till 1:15AM working on a boat. Sorry I didn't answer your txt & call Dirty. I didn't mean to worry you.

So it wasn't Dirty, Egneg (last log in at 3AM), goingdef (called on the phone), duncanjerry (called him too) or Me. That's good!
I would call egneg, but it looks like he was up late last night.

It's tragic news, I already feel bad about it. To those that run boats in the virginia beach area, please contact me at any time (day or night) I will help you recover your boat safely.

It was a 31 year old man named Frank Perez - here is a link to the story.

This is the second story I have read that ended in tradegy. We must always keep in mind our boats, however many hours or however many dollars we have invested can be replaced. We can not. I feel for his family.

This is sad. My heart goes out to the family. It seems like this happens every couple years or so.

This is the worst RC Boater's nightmare! I hope we don't read another tragedy like this one. No boat could cost more than the value of risking your life.

As confident as I may feel on the efficacy of a rescue plan, I always call my friend to come along so that in the event the boat stops, we can coordinate a rescue plan together - no rash decisions. The most useful items so far have been an inflatable raft with 12VDC pump and a waist-high waterproof overalls. Besides NOT swimming after a boat, I wanted to just include my 2 cents for a safe outing at the lake:

                            1. Install flotation inside boat and hatch
                            2. Always run boats with the current coming towards you
                            3. Dedicated rescue boat with separate radio - bright yellow, large, stable design
                            4. Fishing pole/tennis ball/hook/bobber approach
                            5. Waist-high waterproof overalls
                            6. Raft, supplied with life vest, rope, flashlight, manual and 12VDC air pump, oars
                            7. Telescopic aluminum fishnet
                            8. E-mail address printed on boat and post reward if returned
                            9. Cell Phone, waterproof GPS
                            10. Inform boaters, canoers, neighbors, or fisherman in area of your boat and post reward.
                            11. Don't run boats after sun starts to go down in the early evening hours.
                            12. Don't run boats during windy, foggy, or cold days.
                            13. Get the topographic map of your lake from the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife - avoid deep areas.
                            14. Don't run boats alone
                            15. Avoid areas where fisherman congregate - too many lines - I lost my SV27 this way!
                            16. If you're intent on running a boat on bad weather, use your most stable boat.
                            17. Bring binoculars to scan the scene for potential obstacles in the water.
                            18. Thermometer in your kit - to measure water temp to gauge your decision.
                            29. If you're getting a bad vibe on the lake. STOP! Go home. There will be another day...
                            20. Please, add your own......
