Question on the DF sniper hull with or without the rails?

I've talked to OSE, the DF sniper they got. Have 5" rails in them. And I have the FC mount for the 56mm motors, but its only 4" wide. I got the Proteus 524 3t, FC 16s/300a esc. OSE said I could custom order one with out the rails. Is this a good or bad idea? If I ordered one in without the rails, I would do a CF inlay to make up for the strenth that I would lose from not having the rails.

Would just the epoxy be strong enough to hold the motor mount on that big of a motor to the CF?

Or I could use the 4" mount and make up the difference with CF 2.5mm plate, just sandwich a few plates on each side. And still use the rails.

Since I already have the motor mount, and done spent the $45 plus shipping. But whats another motor mount that will work with the 5" rails?

Same one thats on the OSE site http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=fc-5692-m

Thanks Tony. So would you just order it with the rails? How much strenth would I lose if I got the ones without the rails, and did a CF inlay?

Jason, I like rails in mono's; helps locate and contain the batteries. Either way you'd be alright but with a heavy motor and batteries, rail motor mounts would seem stronger in my opinion. If need be, I can walk you through the rail-making process ( I'll b-back later tonight)

The boat from the factory already has the 5" rails in it. But I can custom order it without the rails, but it take 6-8 weeks to come in. Thinking about it now, I see your point on the rails helping to keep your batteries in place

I'm gonna keep the rails, and use a 5" rail motor mount. And use some CF plate to build a battery tray between the rail.

Next question; I have the proteus 524, fairly big motor. Is it better to mount the motor towards the rear, and the batteries in front. Or vice versa? I've seen it both ways, but I think the batts in front is better. Where you have more adjustibilty on your CG.

Or have the motor in the middle and the batteries on the sides?

                Jason,

I agree with your decision to shim the 4" mount to fit the 5" rails. Easiest solution.

                Re motor location :

Anytime you do a build, first mock up EVERYTHING to see where the CG lands.

Here's some reasons I like rear motor locations :

shorter driveshaft ; less parasitic drag

allows batts inside rails - centerline weight distribution reduces chine walk (this is arguable but works for me)

Allows batts to be better secured

Randy advised me to go rear mount ages ago & He totally knows his stuff

If you go rear mount you'll need to trim the back of the FCR rail mount ; it's kind of long in the rear

I have looked at the 5" mounts at South River. Kinda like them. I'm not sure if I'll use their mount, or use the FC mount.

On the FC mount if I use it, I wouldn't use the side plates from the FC mount. I'd just use CF plate, and go from the bottom of the transom to the top of the rail. And epoxy the plates to the rail thats already in the boat. Just where the motor will mount up, to make it a 4" wide section just to mount the motor. Should make for a very stout motor mount. And if I used the FC mount, I could use the top plate on it for an ESC mount.
