What brand flex cable collet do you recommend and which do you not.
Looking to order some new cable collets and can't decide if I want a stainless type, a 3 piece unit, or a 2 piece type. Which are considered better and preferrable. Any particular brand to avoid?
I've always used the Octura two piece compression collets. I've see the .150 size crack on occasion but the 3/16 has been a very good performer. Even in very high power applications.
aeromarine are my fav but octura is very good also..and yes the 150 sizes are likely to crack if used heavily or overtightened, that is over time though.I have used both and had success.the only ones I thought were garbage were stock sv27 collets.
im using the two piece stainless from kintec with good results. octura are nice too, but as mentioned will crack if overtightened. i think over time they will all wear down and need to be replaced, but some last longer than others. all of the above are good tho...
Octura 2-piece works best for me. ALWAYS put anti-seize in the threads to allow best seating of the two pieces with even/constant torque.
I just learned this the hard way-- after a few years of use I had one recently break on me and had to cut it off with a dremel. Now I use anti-sieze...
I vote smaller, lighter, well balanced set screw style. mine...LOL. Those bigger Octura like the 187 is a big slug and not balanced well at all. Look at what the Germans use mostly....100+ mph cats turning crazy rpm. Watch this video and then look at his couplers.
I have used the 3 piece SS from Kintec for 3 years on everthing from UL 1 to 7.5 HP 8s rigger. I quit using Octura because they were out of round and badly out of balance. On the high power stuff, tried the older (10 years) Octura's, by the time I got them tight enough to stop slipping the iner piece broke. Use anti seize or teflon grease on the threads.
The brass insert holds the cable MUCH tighter. No problems in 3 years and i have not had to replace a brass insert yet.
