Who races with 1P in open classes (non spec classes) 40" mono setup questions

I used to call it the burn lap. I think it might be less amp draw to just do the lap than trying to get back on plane from a dead stop. Never really measured though.
FE has evolved. It continues to do so. From better batteries to better motors. It IS the future. No way around that. So why not have the rules evolve with us? Nope, cling to the antiquated rules that were written before the microwave oven.
All the lap penalty does is drive up the cost of racing and/or slow the boats down. If you want to run 1P like Ray was inquiring about you have to slow down and reduce amp draw in case you have a cut. The alternative is to carry as many mah as is legal. At a minimum of 75% increase in battery cost. Either way we lose. A setup that's designed to run 8 laps and leave 20% in the tank is no good if you have a cut. It wont burst into flames for the cut but the end of those cells life is on it's way.
You know me Jay. I always have a love/hate relationship with the rules. IMPBA has some weird rules too. Anybody ever run for an electric US1 title? Of course not.Noisy personComment

1 cut = 101 points deduction
2nd = 75 more point
3rd = dnf per the book.
This way nothing gets cooked and you lose your placing with each cut.Noisy personComment

Hey Terry
The Wisconsin / Minnesota Clubs went to the following system many years ago and really liked it. It accomplished some goals of ours such as: 1. We hated the lap penalty - might as well go home after a bouy cut because your out of contention at that point. 2. We didn't like the IMPBA 50 point deduct because we didn't think you should get first place points with a bouy cut. 3. At the end of our 4 or 5 heat races allot of racers were still in contention. We actually had to incorporate a tie breaker system because the races got so tight. Of course we focused mainly on good close fun raceing and not so much on anal rule book and trophy stuff. Had some really good competition.
Scoring per rule book; 1st - 400, 2nd - 300, 3rd - 225, 4th - 169, 5th - 127, 6th - 96, 7th - 72, 8th - 54. 1 Cut - -100pts, 2 Cuts - -200pts, 3 Cuts - No points for the heat. DNF 25 points, DNS 0 points. Tiebreaker Criteria - First Criteria-Least amount of bouy cuts, Second Criteria-Most first place finishes, Third Criteria-Most second place finishes.
I may have some score sheets left from some of these races to show how some of them added up. I'll have to look. Let me know if you want to see them.

I would run it for a season B'FORE I even hinted at proposing something. The NAMBA reactionaries would have an aortic aneurysm if anybody proposed something that "radical" without proof of concept.

Terry, if we went to a 5 lap race with no penalty laps for anything, you'd still burn up 15 lbs of gear each year. Nobody goes through gear like you do.
Fix the problem...and it's not the fact that a buoy cut requires 1 more lap around the course, which only adds 15 to 18 seconds to your runtime.
There is no way you, or anyone else will come up with a better way to handle buoy cuts that will be supported by a majority. Do what you want at the club level, but leave the rulebook alone. The way NAMBA does it now is not perfect, but what has been posted above is also not perfect. In fact, for me personally, nothing that has been posted on this thread would get my support.
We have too many nitro/gas crossovers entering the FE ranks (both racing and calling our racing) and the last thing we need (again) is an "FE wants to do things differently" rule proposal.
(Not necessarily directed @ Terry) Get your setups right. Stop thinking that speed and high amp draws are the answer, because all it does is cost you equipment and podium finishes.
There was 1 heat in particular at the Nat's that I thought about when reading this thread. It was P-Ltd Hydro and all 6 drivers were on the lead lap the whole race. Twaits and I were 1st and 2nd. Doug got a cut, which pushed him to 6th place points. There is no way the last 4 drivers in that heat would have stood for a "point deduction" for Doug that got him more points than them.Comment

Doug Junior had a cut? NO WAY! I was told by a higher power than you or I that guys that have cuts should be running in the rooky classes until they learn to drive.
In MI that IS how the nitro guys do it. Points deductions. I don't know of another NAMBA race within 500 miles of me. Sooooo, cross overs come from IMPBA. They would have to learn how those goofy NAMBA electric guys do it when they cross over. You guys always get hung up on being "just like nitro" but there's more than one "just like nitro". We can pretend that IMPBA doesn't exist but the reality is that those races are easier to find for some. Uniformity or what ever we call it doesn't exist when it comes to scoring.
NAMBA's penalty is a death penalty. It's too steep. 5 places for Dougies cut. IMPBA's penalty is a slap on the wrist. You don't even lose a placing. I'm merely suggesting something in between.
For the record, I haven't had a cell or speed controller failure since 2010. The last was was due to impact with another boat. I also rarely have cuts these days. I might have 3 this season. But I also haven't done any ridiculous extra penalty laps for quite some time either.Noisy personComment
