I assume it controls the throttle curve?

I am only familiar with the Castle "Punch Control" function. "It controls how much the ESC limits its application of power to the motor under acceleration. The higher the setting, the "calmer" the acceleration will be from a stop or from low speed to high speed." It does not change the throttle curve, there is another function for that. It is really designed for cars, where the application of too much power from a dead stop would cause tire spin and burnouts.

I find it very helpful in SAW racing. It is difficult to even see your boat when it is 250 yards away, and difficult to modulate the throttle as the boat accelerates. It is not always a case of just pining the throttle, some SAW boats need some finessing to get going. I set the Punch Control to ease into the throttle automatically, all I have to do is pin the trigger and the ESC does all the work. I doubt it would be very evident on moderately-powered boats, nor very useful for oval racing.
