3/8 flex drive

hi guys,

are there any ''off the shelf'' drives that are designed to take a larger than 1/4 flex shaft, maybe 3/8 or is this someting i will have to machine up if i want one?

1/4" is the biggest flex shaft that I know of... 3/8" would be a custom unit.

looks like im going to have to design one then, is im not sure these 1/4 flex could handle 13HP constantly ans reliably...(open to be told im wrong as it would save time)

You should tell us what you're building. I've never seen anyone twist a 1/4" cable. 3/16" easy to pretezel but never a 1/4".

I've twisted 1/4" Suhner cable with 12.5kW from a 3080. This was a rare instance, but a lot depends on the RPM/torque you are trying to drive and what components are in the system. As a side note: a square drive system will torelate more torque over a collet system, so if you are borderline I would opt for a sqaure drive.

building a 1.7m mono. no hardware confirmed yet. not even sure if i want to go single or twin. but like the specs of either lmt 3080 or castle 2028 on 12s 250a

You will still probably be fine although a single in a 5+ foot mono is going to be hard on the drive system.

how bout a straight shaft?

hi guys, i thought about solid, but have not yet worked out a viable way of getting the shafts low and in the centre as much as possible. as in, the motor dia / 2 will be the lowest i can get them. so on a big motor, with mount i guess ide be looking at them being around 40mm off the bottom. and i have not yet found a coupling that can allow such a great angle change (still checking out a suggested link which is looking good with a ball joint) to get them out lower, that can both take the rpm and torque loadings. also triming would be a nice option, but i can use tabs for this, i was just trying to avoid un necasery drag when the same action could have been achieved with the drives. i think straight with a flexable coupling would be allot more durable and so will continue to look into this.
