HD video camera and mounting

I see several good quality videos taken on board and want to know more about what equipment is being used and how it is mounted to the boat?

Most are using the gopro cameras. They are hd,waterproof and come with all the mounts you need.

Here's a waterproof camera case and the stick on mounts. I've shown both the bottom and the top of the mounts.
You stick the mount on the hull and then the camera case can be quickly connected and disconnected.
I sell a bunch of these at my shop.
Originally, the only place you could get a gopro was from a Yamaha dealer.

Would you trust sticking a mount like this to your hull deck? And once stuck on (double stick tape?) can you take it off without damaging the finish of the boat?

The mount come with the 3m tape on them and stick very well. I run them on the fender of race bikes with no problems.
They will come off but you have to be careful and take your time as to not damage the surface. I use a bit of wd40 and start working the edges and they have come off well every time.

I don't know if they float but if you have a big enough hit for it to come off I think you'll have greater concerns than the camera. Lol

Cool. What years the rd? I've got a 79 Daytona 400 I'm restoring. It belonged to a buddy of mine when we were kids and was the first street bike I ever threw a leg over.

yamaha_rd350.jpgIf I have a big enough hit? If I hit something that is my bad but if the camera in a wet enviorment leaves then I am a very unhappy camper. This idea is strickly a novalty and I have no interest in making a permanent camera boat. I would like to know what mounting such a camera does to the over all performance of the boat. Fiest the top heavyness has to come into play, and the big box has to affect the aerodynamics al well. Still it looks cool but I am not so sure I want to take that risk.

Wow! That thing is trick and a one owner to boot. Do you still ride it?

I agree with the camera effecting handling and performance. I wouldn't think of it as something you would do often but just a way to get a good pov video.
Another good thing about the gopro is that I comes with a suction mount that I stick on the hood of my car to capture video of my boats running when I'm by my self.

I am using also GoPro.
You need to take into account few factors when positioning the camera.
1. if positioned forward you will NOT have the feeling of speed except you are related to something else (like another boat running in front of you).
2. the above positioning is the most "suitable" for recording also the shacking of the boat;those will be more visible if the water is a bit rough.
3.you need to mount the camera on the middle line of the boat as is adding some 200 gr of weight;but in the same time be careful that the lens itself is on the right side of the camera;
so you may want to mount thee camera few centimeters "offset"
4.do not forget to "treat" the camera with RainX or other GOOD water repellent, it will save you a lot of swearing later.
5.once you glue the camera mount you will notice that you can mount the camera also facing backward with is actually the best way to mount:
-not so visible shaking;
-the feeling of speed even you sail alone (even better with other boats);
-not so much water spray;
-the camera is compensating easier for the changes of light, shadows,etc.
6.and the same important a good post processing software (i am using adobe premiere) and a good computer as the generated files are fairly big.

No it won't float. They do make a floating back to attach to the case. I use a piece of Styrofoam.

I use a Tachyon HD micro cam.
roughly 3x1.5x1" in size.. and tape it down with box tape.. lots of box tape
Comes with a heap of accessories, but the less on hull the better IMHO
around 100US new.
100% waterproof and smaller profile than go pro.

Not saying it's better, just what I use and found good.

Survives 75+mph crashes .. and here's proof of survivability and qual.!
