    Villain EX Help...anyone???

Hi there. I'm a newbie to RC Boating who is about take delivery of a Traxxas Villain EX. Before I attempt to hit the water stock, I would like to go ahead and do whatever hop-ups I can afford, to get the most performance out of the boat. First off, I notice it doesn't seem to be really popular amongst you guys, but nonetheless I'm sure there is enough knowledge on this site to get my EX rippin'. I will also say that (1)I don't plan on racing it in any sort of organized competition, (2)I do want to keep the twin outdrive set up, and (3)I plan to run 14 cells since I already have boo-coo packs for my E Maxx trucks(side-by-side/hump style/12ga wire/deans plugs). With that, I ask that you guys lay it on me...let the advice flow! Give me opinions on crucial upgrades for power, handling and reliability. I'll just sort through and make the improvements as my budget allows. I'm am not in any crazy rush to get on the water, I just need an education on where to start making this thing impress some people. Thanks so much for any help you can offer...

OK, got the boat now...and am starting to amass the upgrade parts. Still need more advice. Specifically which CF props do I use? What is the best method on reversing rotation...swapping the wiring on each individual motor or swapping the motors themselves? What are the best spin fins for this boat? I will be running the stock motors for now and cooling them with the Traxxas kit...something I thought of though...stock motor cooling routing is (1)in the boat, (2)thru 1st motor, (3)thru 2nd motor, and (4)out of the boat. Wouldn't it be better to go (1)in the boat, (2)thru a T-connector, (3)thru both motors, (4)thru another T-connector, and (5)out of the boat??? That way both motors are cooled evenly, instead of one of them receiving the water after being warmed by the other motor. Has anyone tried this theory already?

Need More Info! OSE seems to be out of stock on what I need most(the prop kit). That motor cooling kit can be found anywhere...even Tower. But what about the more specific inquiries on my previous post? As in, reversing rotation on STOCK motors, cooling stock motors, and best spin fins for the boat? Anyone...anyone...Bueller???

if it is you dont have to do anything to it for it to run except batterys...
the mmotors are fine. they dont ned to be reversed. they are already.

EX con i know where youre coming from. Talk to steven vacarro he floats around here and owns the store. He can probably order you the props. I have never reversed the motor becuase one of my friends did it and i didnt like the way it handled. Got any questions feel free to PM me.
PS you could post a wanted add in the swap shop maybe youll get lucky and find the props you are looking for.

Ex, the boat has lost popularity for the simple reason that the Super vee is a much better boat. I don't mean to put the Traxxas EX down, because it does have some nice features, but dollar for dollar the sv27 wins. Problem with hop-ups is that you can spend $150 in extras and still not be as fast as you would like. For motors, people used to use the trinity monster motors. The problem is that they need to be maintained often. 10 runs on the motors and you needed new brushes. Its alot of work.

I'm back getting into the swing of things, so the carbon prop packages will be available again soon.

Thanks justneedspeed and Steven for getting back to me. I understand there are better boats out there but I am kind of stck with the Ex for now. I am an old man of 35 with nephews in there early 20's who both have the EX. I am only competing with them, so I don't need or expect to get astounding performance gains. Besides, its not really a competition thing...more like just water bashing on the local lakes and reservoirs. We just like to tinker and modify in order to get the most we can out of any given model...and eventually we move on. It started with RC trucks(which we still love) and has morphed into boats. I suspect soon enough we will be working on building trailers to pull the boats behind the trucks. Great fun! We are patient though, and try only to make sound upgrades that make sense more towards performance rather than cosmetics. I plan on milking the Titan's with 14 cells(because I already have a lot of 7-cell hump packs) and water cooling. I have read that you can get a little free speed by reversing rotation, at the expense of a little chine walk. I have also read that a quality set of spin fins will remedy the chine walk problem. It seems to make sense on paper, so I have already e-mailed Chris at CSC Performance and requested a couple sets for me and my boys. Unless you have a better idea. I explained to Chris that I am a machinist with full access to materials, equipment, and brain-power, so I could actually make spin fins myself. But I don't feel like it. I would rather take advantage of someone elses intellectual property and purchase some finished fins. So, let me know what you think of my game plan. Will it add a little zest to our Saturdays on the lake or what? I Love This Site! Thanks again for your help and support.........next up(when I'm ready to spend some real money), Shockwave 55 trailered behind a 1/5th scale 4x4 truck...maybe...

Hey guys...another inquiry...The out of stock Villain EX prop kit says that they are Graupner K Series 51mm's cut down to 48mm. Since I noticed that the K Series 51mm's are in stock I started to wonder. How much can that 3mm affect performance either way(good or bad)? What results could one expect from just slapping on the uncut 51mm props and running them? I mean, 3mm, that's 1.5mm on either side of center. It doesn't seem like it would make or break a real big deal, but I'm the RC boat novice. You guys are the pros, what do you think? Also, are the Octura shafts that come in the kit(ose-traxxaspropkit) necessary to run those props? Do those props fit on the stock shafts? How about on the Traxxas 3/16" shafts(part #1529X)? Since 4mm=+/-.1575" and 3/16"=.1875", my initial guess would be that they are not compatible. Or does .03 not make much difference there? That would seem crazy to me. I make full scale truck wheels for a living, and .03 would make the difference between a passed inspection and rework. But again, you're the pros...you tell me...

Your performance will increase but your amps will also increase. You could also try the 40 and 45 mm props as are also available for a twin drive setup.
