Sometimes I forget how easy Google makes things. Third result down has a good answer from an rc groups member.

Some ESC's have crappy BEC's (Hydra 240LV for example). So you have to use seperate battery to power the Receiver. Disconnect red wire coming from ESC before plugging into receiver to disenable internal BEC. Then plug receiver battery into B port (Battery) of receiver

I like the lower 6v voltage of A123 cells. The higher voltage of 7v lipo receiver packs needs servo rated for higher voltage.

Auquacraft and Proboat usually have good internal BEC. The new Hydra ICE versions should be OK up to 6s.(I hope)
