    Painting help

    Hey guys,
I had a friend airbrush my 29" toy sport syncron. I had him paint it pearl white with blue metallic flake. It didn't turn out as nice as I had hoped. I was really looking for a nice glossy finish but that didn't happen. He applied two coats of clear. How many coats does every one recommend ? Also has anyone successfully sprayed there hulls out of a can ? I'm trying to figure out if I should give it a light sanding and start over or if I should apply more clear coat. What's everyone's opinion on how many coats of clear and also can spraying a fiberglass hull ?
    Thanks

Try light wet sanding with 600 grit paper between coats. I used a rattle can for base red and rattle can for clear-- I think I put 5 coats of clear on it.

HOWEVER, you must make sure your clear coat is compatible with your base coat chemistry.

Do not apply clear coat...unless you are a pro and have the knowledge of how it is done with proper paints and paint guns...rattle cans will not cut it.....you will probably have to remove all paint and start over if you want the finish you desire

I found this link from here
        http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/inf...spraypaint.php

I started sanding last night with 400grit then 600grit.
Im going to try tonight to apply the primer. Then light sand the primer. 2 coats of base, light sanding.
Then apply my decals and 2 coats of clear.

I had really good luck painting my Miss Geico with Dupli-color which is the acrylic lacquer sold in auto shops like Pep Boys or AutoZone. I use their primer, paint and clearcoat. Just follow the instructions, a couple light coats and the last coat should be the heaviest. Make sure the paint is compatible with your boats material, plastic, fiberglass etc.

you really need to give it a day or two before puttin the clear on as well, otherwise it goes into the other paint
Light coats and dont worry if it looks a bit crap the first time you put a thin coat on.

I would have found a body shop to clear it for me

This is probaby the best advice---
While I had good results with rattlecans, it does not really compare to professional airbrush, also, rattle can paint will chip off very easily. Your syncron deserves better...

A couple of shot of my MG. I think it turned out pretty well. That's good advice to make sure the paint is really cured a couple of days before clearcoat and also if you use striping tape be very careful that you use very light coats of clear or it will buckle and curl.

Your right it does deserve better !
Im going to check with a few local body shops on a price.
I have seen a few people really do a great job with a rattle can
                    Rippers included

                        Looks good to me chief....
Im just looking to a nice gloss white base coat with some nice decals. I really think this can be done nicely with rattlecans.
I will however look into a bodyshop because a boat this nice does deserve a great paintjob...which is why I wasnt happy with the first airbrush job..it was
just way to flat and dull.

If your going to go the rattle can route I too highly recommend the Dupli-Color
Products. It is by far the best spray can paint I have ever used and I have pretty much used all of them
After I lay down my base color I wet sand it starting with 600 and work my up to 1500.
After a couple more days of curing I lay down the clear.
I really like the Duplicolor clear as it is not as sensitive to humidity.
If it starts to fog at all I will hit it lightly with a blow dryer and takes out the fogging pretty quick.
I do my own painting for a couple of reasons , I enjoy it and there's no way i'mgoing to spend big bucks for a body shop to
do it when the boat is going to see heavy use and get scuffed, scratched, or the worst, CRASHED!

You can base it with rattle can, then just have a body shop clear it with a car. Solid colors are fine to spray with spray paint, and will look fine with automotive clear. Metallics are trickier to get even and better sprayed thru a hvlp gun. Either way, a body shop prolly will charge 50 bux to just clear it. I know that's what I would ask for.
