    Overheating ESC

    Here is my setup
    Titan 29
    fiago 9xl
    cc 120 esc
    x642 prop
2-4s lipo elite 4500 30c packs in parallel or 2-4200 6 cell nimh in series

the small battery looking things on the back of the esc overheated to the point that the shrink wrap pealed off of them. there was some smoke when I took the hatch off. the batteries were warm, motor was warm, the main part of the esc was warm, the only thing hot were the battery looking things. I don't want to damage the esc, it still worked fine when I brought it in. I don't know how to figure out the amp draw on this setup if that is the problem. The boat runs dry. I can't run at full throtle most of the time so that may be a factor as well.
Any advise you could give would be appreciated. Thank You Kevin

Please define "battery looking things". Are you refering to the black round capacitors soldered to the end of the esc?

Did he happen when running the (2) 4s packs in parallel? It could be just to much heat buildup over the long runtime.

it happened with both. I did a 5 min run with the nimh, let it cool, the a 5 min run with lipos. the result was the same at the end of both runs.

not sure if I should prop down, upgrade to a larger esc, or if ther is something else I should look into. also could I have damaged the capacitors on the esc? if so could I solder new ones on or do I have to send it to CC?

Anyone have an idea on what the problem could be? I'm fairly new to fast elec boats, this is my first build after having an SV for a year.

Can you post some pictures of the problem part. I maybe able to tell what they are.

Probably what you are talking about are the two black capacitors at the end. They should be still fine as long as it still arms. I would either suggest going done to a smaller prop or not running it so long. If you have a temp gun, the ESC should not be hotter than 130 after a run.

Thanks for the help, any suggestions on prop size. I tried an m445, then went down to a x642 which had been fine till this last time out when it overheated.

Prop down to X442 or even a M440.....
Nothing like keeping you lipos warm and your prop wet!!

thanks, I'll give those a try. What do you run on your titan? Was this all because of running at parcial throttle. I had read that was bad for the esc so I guess I will prop down till I get it to run a at 40mph wot. that seems to be a comfortable speed for that hull, 45mph was too fast unless the water was calm.

What is the total wire length of the battery wires?

The wires coming out of the esc are 6''. The wires coming out of the packs are 5 1/2''. Everything is connected with 5.5mm bullet connectors. Also made y connectors with 1'' of wire to run packs in parralel
