    Hughey Dual .05 Power Units

Back in the day, (Mid 80s) Hughey Geared Dual motor drive units were the bomb. Has anyone ever tried Brushless motors in one of these units? The gears were changeable and you could go from anywhere from a 1.54 to 1 ratio to a 2.24 to 1 ratio. It enabled you to spend a much bigger prop.

I played with one in a Miss Bud back in 2005 but it was a total waste in all honesty. Of course back then I really didnt fully understand setups and how much power a typical hull requires. I was running a couple Feigao 540 cans and it wasnt any faster than with a couple brushed cans. Ended up pulling out the tranny and going with a single 540 60mm can. It was definately faster after that change!

With todays choices of 4 pole motors and even the 8 and 12 pole outrunners power is rarely an issue anymore. Lots of folks now run way too much motor for the hull size. And theres nothing really wrong with that but it makes tranny's almost unheard of anymore.

I haven't tried brushless, but I do have a 27 turn Trinity motor in my Hughey tranny. It works Great and the motor is cooler allso. Chris Fine has a pix on his web sight of a Drifter with a Lehner Basic brushless motor. I believe they work just fine with brushless, as long as you stay with smaller motors.

The problems with the Hughey units and BL motors are the lack of cooling - most cooling jackets are too large in diameter so the motors will not fit in the unit; and pinion size - hard to find the right gears with a 5mm bore. I used the Hughey boxes a lot with brushed motors, ditto the larger and stouter Fine Design units with BLs. One club member has a Fine box in his Titan 29, with a UL-1 motor it really flies - he isn't too far behind the "real" P-Mono setups running Neu power. It can run larger, more efficient props and leaves direct-drive P-LOS setups in its wake.

Thanks Jay. I knew you would know. I may get one from Fine Design and see how it does. The reason I brought this up is I just saw a Old but unused MRP Dual Motor Set up go for $77 on eBay and it brought back some memories.
