    Cat Strut/Rudder Setup

Setup question just for my knowledge and possible future build. Has anyone setup one with a single drive but was still able to use a scale rudder?

For example, using this scale rudder:

But still have an adjustable strut on a single drive? Like this:

The above is a hydro build on OSE. I'm not sure if a cat can be setup with an adjustable strut (interior to the hull) but still have a scale rudder.

Or using a less adjustable strut like this but allows the use of a scale rudder:

On a cat, can the prop be located before the transom/stern or does need to be located behind it for performance/functionality?

With a single drive, I'd like to avoid using this strut & rudder setup:

    Thoughts?

Well of course a single drive can use a scale rudder, the question really is "do you mind a small reduction in performance in order to have a scale rudder" ?

The further back the prop & rudder is located the higher the performance in most cases.

Personaly I feel that a scale rudder is prefered.

Harry, do you personally have this setup or know of a build thread of one (single drive w/scale rudder)? I'm very curious of how it was accomplished and the strut used. Pics would be very helpful and explain a lot.

Btw, what's the optimal distance between the tail edge of the prop and the leading edge of the rudder? Is there a ratio used? From the last pic I posted above, it can looks like it can be very close.

      Thanks!

I do not have a scale rudder setup.

The distance between the rudder and prop can be very close.

Once again, when they are close there will be a small reduction in performance.

the only absoulute rule is "they must not hit each other ever"

My "absolute rule" is never use a strudder on a single drive FE boat. Unless you like to drive a squirely in the straights, horrible in the turns boat. JIM
