Got a New Boat for my 1 year Anniversary - few questions

    Hey guys,

Well I bought my wife some patio furniture that she has been wanting for our 1 year anniversary, and she ended up getting me a boat I had my eye on and told her about.

The boat is a Thunder Tiger Outlaw OBL (the 41" mono)

Now I know how people on here and everywhere said these boats are crap stock...I think otherwise they look fine with a few changes, but I am also not a die-hard, hardcore speed freak like a lot of you lol. Anyways this is a brand new boat, never been used and was has been upgraded then sold to us.

The upgraded motor is a Leopard 3674 1700kv and paired with a Seaking 120a ESC.

I know these boats stock had issues, were way, way underpowered as the motors from what I found were 500watt max motors..this Leopard motor is 2400w and definitely larger than the stock motor..just not huge like some of you guys are running (I believe I am thinking of the guy with red sports car in his avatar..lol) Also double the size ESC 60a stock vs. 120a now...makes me believe the boat will run much more safely than when it was stock.

So I plan to run it on 4s-5s max (since that is what I am capable of with the batteries I already have.) I am only looking to get maybe 35 mph out of the boat, as it really is a boat I wanted to have just to run along side the real boat when we are out cruising, being it has a bigger hull. 40mph would be great, but not a deal breaker...Not trying to break any speed records...my fastech recently on 5s so far has been PLENTY fast for me..(im guessing 40mph)..even after 2 years in this hobby.

    My questions are:

    1) with this setup will this be possible? I would hate to break my wifes heart and tell her the boat she got me is junk and won't work and I need to upgrade it even more which means $$$ that I don't need to be spending on toys.

    2) Also could the boat be ran on 6s safely down the road, or is 5s the max I should go?

    3) I have a feeling I will need to experiment with props to get it dialed in just right too. Any suggestions on props for it?

From what I am seeing, this boat should be just fine with this setup for what I am looking for. I will not be upgrading it, so however it performs as-is will be what I am stuck with for at least 6 months, I just don't want to be burning up the motor/esc like the stock internals were doing on these boats, so if I absolutely have to, I will sell the motor in there before I even use it, and just wait until I can change to something different I guess..

I am definitely excited about the boat, the size of the hull itself makes me excited (still hasn't arrived yet) but I just wanted to hear some thoughts on this. Please go easy on me and try not to ruin my excitement with horrible news lol.

    Thank you.

Im still learning, but I know enough to realize the motor and speed control in that boat is a no go for sure. UNLESS (and I do mean UNLESS) you use a small prop.

The 3674 is probably better suited for 26"-29" boats.

I am starting to buy parts to build a 1 meter boat, similar in size to the boat you got. The motor suggestions have been very large outrunners such as T600 size (slow) to motors 5292 sized (FAST)- Also the Castle 1717. The ESC's are dependent on the motor I choose and if Im going 6S-12S- so a hell of a variance.

I have a 32" Pursuit with a 4074 and Im told that might be a tad on the weak side.

Your boat will be severely underpowered and your ESC is probably to small. Use a small prop like a 37-40 size would be my guess. Im sure the boat could handle more but you got some real weak links.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news (twice for me today).

I run a feagio 1390 12xl in my impulse 31 witha hk 120esc with no problems, and your 1300 kv should handle 6s but in a 40" boat I would like a little more leway on the esc, but start out with a small prop, maybe a x642. I am sure you wil get more input on this real soon.

Ya I figured it was a bit small, but the way I am looking at it is, if the stock motor and esc survived (which I have read cases of people running their boats on 4s on the stock setup with no problems at all..just run a smaller prop) then a motor that can handle 2500w vs 500w and an esc double that of the stock esc..then the boat should in theory be just fine..not fast, but useable.

Only thing I can do is wait and see I guess. I will be sure to let you guys know my results.

If I were to upgrade later on, what would be a good Cheap...yes I said cheap...motor to use? I am not spending $100+ on just a motor anytime soon, so if I can't get anything for less than that, then I will live with a slower boat I guess.

I am finding larger motors on hobbyking such as the KB45-10XL 1200kv but the specs on that motor are really no better than the motor I already have..just a larger motor in physical size. I am new to all this, as I have only run RTR boats before so I am still learning of course.

Thanks for your input. Not the news I had hoped for, but hey I learn as I go, and use what I have in the present time. We all have to start somewhere.

I was told running a big boat like this on 6S is pushing it amp wise. SO your either going to need to be flexible with batteries.motor/esc or you are just going to have a slow boat.

Im going to put a T600 in mine to start. They are $60 on HK. Ben @ Fightercat has a motor that would work well for around $125. But with that motor it would require 8S-12S and a fairly expensive ESC.

My advice is prop that thing real small and smile. Or break out the wallet.

Sell the esc. Buy a t-180. Run 6s2p and a x442. Wont be that fast, but will be much, much safer.

What about this motor? Too small? Is KV rating right? (not sure what KV I should have with this boat for 4s-6s)

Let me know how that motor works out for you. Looks like a good candidate

I run the T-600 in my 31" rico on 6s. It's a great motor, but not the best choice for your hull.

I say run at least a 40mm motor and at least 6s. Having a boat in that size range is going to require a motor and voltage to "fit". I understand your not looking for all out speed, but it has to be reliable.

                        This motor would work well.

Run on 6s with a 180amp esc and an Octura X447/3 prop. Youll have a nice running boat that will last a long time. This might be a 55mph set up, but you can prop down to lower the speed and slightly increase run time. You wont have to worry about temps with the motor and esc either. Usually, when it comes to boats, you have to pay to play, but it can be done on a budget too.

I like Larry's choice of the 4082............he didnt specify a kv but i would recommend the 1000 or 1250kv max. You said you wanted a 35-ish mph boat that will run strong, cool, and have some longevity I think, so the 1000kv on 6s with an x447 or the 1250kv with an x445 would get you right there.

The 45" Scarab in my signature is a scale pleasure boat, it has the 4082 1000kv on 6s2p swingin' an x445 for 33mph providing long runtime and cool temps. The same setup with the 447 should be upper 30's for your hull.

BTW, dont waste a dime on the KB45's!!!
