I use the Garmin Forerunner 101. Small, light, reliable.

I take the wrist strap off and use Velcro to hold it inside the hull.

    $85 on Amazon.com
    http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerun.../dp/B0001ILXGQ

The Garmin eTrex is popular (it is the yellow one you see) but it is HUGE compared to the Forerunner.

There is also the Garmin Geko 101 and 201 which is much smaller than the Etrex. The 101 is the cheaper of the two but has been discontinued. However you may be able to find a used one on ebay for a good price.

        i appreciate the replies

i was looking at the Etrex and a few other models that were similar.

i kept over looking the Forerunner, but hey if the Forerunner works..
        i love its size!

The Garmin eTrex is a good one.
          That is what i use.
If your buying Garmin make sure it is WAAS-enabled for the best accuracy (the eTrex is ), unfortunatly just a bit heavier and more bulky than others.

I've been using the eTrex H also. Like DeWalt1/8 was saying, be sure to get the WAAS enabled one. Fast signal aquisition and keeps it. I bought the forerunner 101 first and took it back. It took a long to aquire and it lost the signal ALOT. I tried it all over the United States with the same result. I may have just had a bad one though. Here's a link for the eTrex H. Happy shopping.

                  eTrex = 5.3 oz
                  4.4" x 2.0" x 1.2" (11.2 x 5.1 x 3.0 cm)

                  Forerunner 101 = 2.6 oz
                  3.26" x 1.71" x 0.91" (8.28 x 4.35 x 2.3 cm)

                  And some info on WAAS:

i was using the garmin etrex. very nice unit. a little heavy. found a small one that straps onto your arm and gives you the time, mph, avg mph, max mph, time running, distance, & if you use it for actually running or walking, how many calories you burned, and you can set a course on it and will give you how many laps.
it is a triangle and waterproof and i put it in a sandwich bag and made a place for it inside the hull in a styrofoam compartment.
R300 GPS Sport Tool for running by NAVMAN. it sells for $140 but was on sale for $40 new. uses 1 AA bat.
