    Brushed ESC help!

I recently sold my Kyosho twinstorm on eBay for a pretty good price, however the seller has just contacted me to say it keeps cutting out at full speed, and has been told by his LHS. obviously I sold it in good working order but equally must believe that there's something wrong.

My question is what would be a good substitute esc, it has twin 550 motors and runs 14 cell nimh which is all a bit "old hat" now, when we spoke after the purchase he was talking about going brushless so I will try and play that card and offer to buy him a cheap brushless esc, however I have no idea what I could use if he wants to stay with brushed motors? Traxxas evx2 go for silly money and I want to stick at under $40 otherwise I will just have him send it back for a refund.

    Thanks

Did you sell him "good working order" batteries with it as well? Bad, or old batteries will do just that, cut out with a higher amp draw. I have also had a cheap charger tell me my batts were fully charged but were not. Tell him to buy a decent set of nimh's, 7 cell
preferred, (he'll want them anyway), and get back to you.

Yeah he got batteries and charger off me too which were good quality 8.4v nimh so I don't think it's that

does the ESC have LVC? the nimhs could be dipping significantly in voltage.
the proboat (although sometimes hated) 50A waterproof ESC will live through anything you can put it through, sometimes it messes up but caps (and a diode for forward only) will help with that alot .

The stock ESC doesnt have a LVC, can i used a brushless esc on this for twin brushed motors? how would this work to wire them up?

It sounds like there is nothing wrong with the ESC. He needs to try fresh new batteries.

NO, you cannot use a brushless ESC with a brushed motor. Just won't work. Different technology altogether.

The mamba monster will run both brushless, and brushed.

Page 10 of the manual shows you. I was surprised to find out that it does this, there is no mention of it on the product page. I have version 3, if that matters.

That's interesting would that work with any brushless esc? I only sold the boat for $160 so a $30-$40 solution is what I am after

I concur, I have had nimh's work fine one day, and the next time out, act funny. How old were they? I have done a quick scan of the internets, and your budget will not allow a fix at this time. A couple years back Traxxas had me send my bad esc to them
and they sent me the new updated EVX2 for only $45. Perhaps Kyosho would as well, (kinda doubt it though). Perhaps the buyer has a friend with a good set of batts, or his LHS will let him try a set. Are the terminals clean? Any binding in the drive train?

The guy has been quoted $170 dollars from a kyosho dealer! The batteries are not even a year old and had about 20 cycles each, he says the esc light starts flashing as it judders on full throttle and won't go in reverse, I've told him to do a esc reset to see, he's also tried some other batteries and it did the same thing, he says it's fine to start will and after its been running a while that's when it starts behaving badly, might be overheating?

No, only that one that I know of. The way I am see it is if you had the boat and it worked fine, and sold it with the description "as is" I wouldn't bother. It's nice that you are trying to do right, but people screw things up too, and it may have nothing to do with you. There is so many things that can be causing that problem and without the right equipment and the right person diagnosing it you cant determine who's to blame. The LHS may or may not know what they are doing and just might want to sell the guy something.

Just a thought but has something moved during transit causing binding anywhere in the drive system?

the evx will flash for batteries if set to lipo cutoff or for thermal cutoff, might be binding the flex or slipping the colet just some things to look into that have stumped me a couple times
