cat build with another motor question. i'm lost!

Ok i'm more or less a nitro trick guy so I got a nitro boat first, a miss Vegas. Got her going ok as it was something I was semi familiar with.then I got a venom king of shaves........then I just got a Genesis and oh boy am I lost. The kos has a leopard 4082 2200kv and a 180a esc.now the Genesis has the same motor but says its a 1250kv motor!! It has a Swordfish 200a esc. Dose my kos have a bigger motor than the Genesis!? Should I expect higher speeds than the Genesis? I have no idea what props are on them. I know I need some work right! Any kinda help would be sweet! Thanks in advance!

The lower the kv rating the more torque and the higher the kv the higher the top speed. Do you mean they both have the same brand motor?

Yes they are both leopard 4082. So the Genesis is more torque......so then the guess that the kos is gonna be faster would be correct.

The 2200 kv is a 4S motor and the 1250 kv is a 6S motor.

So the rpm will be the same on both motors? So what would be the benifits of running the 1250kv over the 2200 if any

You can figure the theorical rpms of each motor by using volts X kv. So for the 2200 kv on 4s = 2200kv X 14.8v = 32560 rpm and the 1250kv using 6s becomes 1250kv X 22.2v = 27750 rpm.

This means using the same propeller the 1250 Kv motor will be slower on 6S than the 2200 will be on 4S. But you should be able to prop up the 6S motor to get the same speeds. If you do this you will have more run time and lower amp draw with the 6S setup. Or, you can prop up more to gain speed over the 4S setup. But regardless, you will have to carefully monitor temperatures to make certain you are not over-stressing your setup. That means run for 60 seconds (use a timer) and bring the boat in to check. Then another 60 seconds and so on until you are certain the setup is not too hot.

Thanks for all the help guys! I have learned alot. I always thought the bigger boats needed abigger motor but kv is whst im looking for. Dose the esc have anything to do with speed.

Well while being able to calculate the RPM is great - bigger boats do need bigger motors is still true. There is yet one of many other factors to consider and this is the Power rating. Where your LEO 4082 (40mm X 82mm in size) is rated by the MFG as a 3500 watt max output motor compared to say a LEO 3674 (36mmX74mm in size) motor that is rated as a 2400 watt motor. So size does matter. These power ratings are used as a guidline and your results may vary. Lets assume all things are equal between the 2 motors in this example you would assume that the 4082 motor will move a larger boat more efficiently than the smaller 3674.

Maybe someone else can explain the ESC's contribution to the equation. But short answer is yes the ESC does have an effect on speed.

Wow this electric stuff is confusing! Lol I guess my very basic question is am I better off
the 1250kv motor in the Genesis rather than putting in the kos? As apposed to the 2200kv

Put the 1250kv motor on 6s in the Genesis and the 2200kv on 4s in the EKOS. Both are good setups in each boat.
