I have a outrigger my dad built earlier this year. He scaled the hull down to 22" and it weights just under 2 lbs. He had it running somewhat with a 3500kv motor out of a 1/10 scale buggy, but that motor fried. He installed a turnigy 120a esc. and a 4400kv motor(chili pepper). He is loosing a battle with cancer now and is unable to work on the boat, so I am trying to get it running. I ran the boat with a 1445 prop, 3 small laps amd motor was at 200*. I used 1440 and still at 200*. not knowing much about props I thought I installed a smaller prop (2035) ran it for 3 laps temped at 175* ran 2 more laps boat died. motor was over 210* and my 7.4 5000mah pack was puffed up. The motor is done, the speed controller was never over 150*. The boat was moving pretty fast with the 1440 prop. I would like to know and recommendations for a new motor and prop. The boat can only hold 1 battery, so I will be using a 7.4v 5250 mah(if it is still good). would be nice to run it for a few minutes. thanks for the help.
need help setting up an outrigger/ motor-prop

For what it's worth, I'm planning a similar build for the winter.
I'm planning a Leopard 2860 4040kv (could be 4050 don't remember), 40C battery about 53-5500 mah. I'll probably use a 200 amp esc, I don't like running to close to the limits of the esc, that Leopard is rated a 1300 watts.
I'll try a x437 that has been de-tongued and has a bit of a back cut first and see what happens.
The same boat in nitro I was running a worked over x440 with an aircooled buggy engine.
No real idea how this setup will work but by the numbers it should be a good one. Guess I'll find out next spring!
Good batteries are a necessity for a high performance 2s setup, they have to be able to supply a lot of current, remember when you go to a lower voltage the amperage has to increase to make the same amount of power.
1300 watts / 7.4v = 175 amps
1300 watts / 14.8v = 87 amps
who'd have thought it would be harder and more expensive to build a reliable & fast small boat than a bigger one! Oh well as they say in racing - you can have fast, cheap or reliable. Choose 2!
I'm assuming since it's a rigger, speed it what you're after. If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps? -
update
Well I got the boat painted, while waiting for my new parts to show up.
leopard 2860 4050kv, props and flex shaft.
I had to build a new motor mount for the leopard and new carbon fiber covers for the boat. I ran it and it worked great. after a few minutes the motor and esc are only at 95*. so here is a summary of the boat.
22" out rigger
leopard 2860 4050 kv motor
turnigy 120a esc
1 5250 mah 60c battery
octura y534 prop
weights appr. 2 lbs

Runs nice, a little tuning at that will fly! Very nice for a first run.
LOL my nitro rigger has almost exactly the same paint job, my red is a little deeper, actually Dupli-Color Metallic Garnet but the blue looks close. The electric one is going to be exactly the same.
Thanks for being the test pilot for the setup, I thought it would work but you never know, I've never built a 2s boat before, Everything I have is 4s, I have lots of 2s packs for them so why not try something new. Might have re think my cat build, I have the hardware for twins but was leaning towards a single UL-1 motor. It's a 26" H&M Drifter cat.
Congrats! If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?Comment

update: ran the boat today with a revtech 6500mah 65c batt, was tuning boat and gps said it went 31mph with a plastic 1440 prop. that batt was weak and the weather was getting bad, but on the last run finally got the boat to run smooth(was hopping in the straight a ways) will try again with full charge tomorrow and see what i get for speed.Comment

update: the over heating was due to the esc starting to go bad(cause from hooking batt up backwards a few runs ago, most likely). I bought and installed an etti 150a and temps were back to normal.
since this set up is way to much amp hungry for one battery I have retired the boat. I have moved the running gear over to a Delta force 22, I will be posting a thread for this soon. i will be changing motor and going to 14.8 with a comparision between the two set up.
My dad did get to see the boat run some time in january, and was thrilled to see how nice it ran. He past away in March so this boat was the last project we worked on together. HE is very much missed. GOD BLESS.Comment

Hi fla350tt, sorry for your loss. Just thought I'd share this, I built a small rigger, Predator plan which is a free download. I'm runng a 3650 3300kv motor (unknown chinese make, bought off trademe), 3S 4000 30c turnigy, sk90 esc, x632 prop. Havn't got a gps but it can beat 45 nitro hydros, guessing around the 50mph mark. With a x437-3 blade prop it can give 45 riggers a run, but can be a bit unstable being such a small boat. Temps are not excessively hot, around 40*C with smaller prop, and no problems running 5 lap races. I am currently widening the sponsons out a bit to see if I can get a bit more stability, and plan to run it in about four weeks at our last hydrofest for this year. It is currently the top open electric boat in the series.NZMPBA 2013, 2016 Open Electric Champion. NZMPBA 2016 P Offshore Champion.
2016 SUHA Q Sport Hydro Hi Points Champion.
BOPMPBC Open Mono, Open Electric Champion.Comment
