Flex shaft problems

hi guys. Well I order some new parts for my KOS p1 35". I bought a new flex cable, teflon tubing, 5mm coupler, drive dog, and prop nut. The original setup in the p1 is 4mm. I read somewhere on here that a .187 cable and teflon tubing would fit along with a 3/16 shaft. Well it doesnt. the stinger is to small and i didnt even think about that when I ordered the stuff. So Im waying my options of buying a transom to fit what I bought or do I send it all back? And what will fit directly in there that is a stronger upgraded shaft. I am runnin on 5s and it has been great but I know this flex shaft and cheesy coupler that came with the boat will evently go. What about drilling out the stinger to accomodate the 3/16 shaft? Please let me know what you think.

if you have a 4MM drive and your replace it, a .150 flex cable will fit in no problems.
I had a similiar problem when i was upgrading my genesis drive shaft. i actually found that its pretty rare that the 4mm Flex cable breaks, its the actual drive shaft through the strut that is the weak point. so i had to install the speedmaster 3.16 bushing into the original strut, then I can use the 150 flex to 3/16 stub.
Ive ran my boat with 5S once with the 4074 motor and unfortunatly was only able to get about half throttle out of it. its just a bit too much power.

i drilled out my apparition bushing and its holding up fine though i may drill it out and install a new bushing after it wears out, welcome to ose!

so when you drilled ot the bushing did you have to remove the teflon liner to. So let me get this right, you drilled out the bushing in the end of the stinger, what size of shaft did you go with because the apparition is the same as the kos with 4mm. Do you water issues and how well does that shaft turn in there without a bearing

a 150 cable tes, but the shaft on the end has to be 4mm also. All of the 150 cables i see on here are 3/16 on the end which wont go.

You should be able to knock out the teflon bushings from the stinger. Replace them with a bushing made from the same size tube as the stuffing tube. The .187 will fit in the original stuffing tube minus the teflon liner.I had the same issue with hardware I bought and was able to get it sorted out fairly easily.

and how does it work without a teflon liner. Does it leak and does the shaft wear on the side of the stuffing tube.

Mine has been fine without a lliner. No real issues with water, and no broken shafts. I lost my shaft last time out but that was due to an improperly tightened collet. I have run my mono fairly hard with out any issue's what so ever.

I've never used teflon, it can cause more problems than it solves if it heats up, melts and binds, also more drag with the teflon, with a little room to move in the brass tube the flex shaft assumes an S shape as it twists and only touches the brass tube in a few areas.
Brass is an excellent bushing material, no problems with wear if a decent waterproof grease is used, anything that is nice and creamy, not stringy and is waterproof is fine.
With the grease and the wind of the cable acting as a thread it will pump the grease and water out of the tube, a small piece of large diameter fuel tube over the end of the stuffing tube and touching the flex cable can be used as a seal inside the boat, only needs to be 1/4" long slid out far enough to just barely touching the cable in front of the collet.
I bet if it was August you would have been swimming for that shaft! Water is only about 5 feet deep or so. I'm tempted to drag that whole area with a magnet in the spring, do you have any idea how much stuff has been lost down there over the last 30 some odd years of that spot being used.
The weight in scrap from glow plugs would make it worth it!

I drilled out the bushing and used a .150 shaft which works perfectly withe the 4pm liner

I also run a few boats with just the brass stuffing tube-- they run bone dry...

thanks guys for the help and answers. I did get the new shaft in and everything works great. Ill tell ya though it ended up being a complete overhaul of the shaft and the inside. I had to put a bigger stuffing tube to fit the .187 cable and everything else i bought. The stinger had to be drilled out and i had to make bushings to fit it. It was a real project today!
