Well hello everyone. My name is nick, I have only been into boats for the last few months and have recently just purchased a very very gently used genisis cat. The boat came with two fsd motors one 2075 kv and one 2770 kv motor. I put a hydra 120 in it w the 2075 kv motor a grim racer 42/55 prop balanced and unpolished( does it need polished and sharpened??). I took it to the hobby shop to have the esc put in and apparently they didn't know that if u run the 120 over 3 s u have to use a external bec. Mine was set at 5 s 5000'mah 20c. I put it in the water two passes and it kind of caught fire. Moral of the story Is I am getting another hydra 120 which motor that I have will work the best ? Also is this prop a good idea? All I can say is when it ran for 5 min it was antibody ship. It shot straight out of the wate it was insane. Alright guys please add any constructive remarks asap , time is running out in Ohio to play w my boat!!!! Thanks in advance . Nick

Hi Nick,
I don't know much about cats I usually run V's. but IMO, 2075kv motor with hydra120A w/ external BEC and start with a smaller prop like X437/2 @ 4S lipo. test run for a pass or two then check the temp. if it's running cool then you may gradually increase the prop size. just my two cents. Like I said, I'm not an expert on CATS so I could be wrong. I'm sure other members has more knowledge about this. Give them a little more time to respond to your questions.

That sounds like a good way to get a baseline on things and get a feel for the boat. I am test running it on Saturday hopefully weather permitting. How do I get temps on esc and motor??? Use a ir heat gun? I know they have those little digital read out temp gauges that go around motor casings, can you just wrap those around esc as well???? What's a acceptable temp for hydra 120? Thanks StephenComment

You had several problems.
- It is too bad that most LHS clerks know nothing about boats, but that is a lesson learned for you.
- The 2075 Kv motor is too much for 5S, you drew too many amps especially with that prop. You would probably have been okay with 4S, the instructions say to use 3S.
- You need to monitor the temperatures with a heat "gun", they can be had for $20-$30 from several suppliers.
- When running a high power system, limit your running to 2 minutes (use a watch!) until you know things will not overheat. If anything gets over 140*F you are probably pushing too hard or running too long.
- Never run the 2775 Kv motor in that hull. It is too small and has an excessive Kv even for 4S. The prop would have to bee too small to be efficient.
Don't give up, the more you learn the more fun you'll have!

If you don't have a heat measuring device you can go by feel-- anything you couldn't touch for 10 seconds comfortably is probably too hot (including connectors). On the motor, aside from the can, also check the collate temp.

fluid it says in the directions to only run 3s w/o a exbec of 10 amps or greater i believe. If exbec is put on it will work upto 6s??? Ok so i will start it at 4s not a issue but thats as low as i can go with batteries i have. and would a octura prop like x 642 be more appropriate. i dont wanna blow it up , so i just want a safe starting point. and i will try that as well chief until i get my heat gun next week. thanks guys every lil bit is helping. The crazy thing is i used ny bj26 on 5 s w octurax642 prop w all stock esc and motor probably 50x and never had a issue now i buy this big fancy esc and it is a bigger pain to take care of????Comment

IMO, his first problem would be the crappy FSD motors. They are very inefficient and draw more power than what they make. Using the Castle ESC with those motors is like putting a stand alone engine management system in a Kia. Save yourself some money and headaches and get yourself a 1800-200KV 4082 4 pole motor. It will move that boat very well with a X442-X447 prop, on 4-5S.Comment

Jack black , i didn't know they were garbage but I had a idea just by looks and seeing where they were sold on the net. And your analogy was hilarious. Is there a certain brand I hear slot about the leopard brand is that a good brand ? I understand that kv is in relation to eons lower kv has lower top end but more torque ??? Is that correct? And how do u know if a motor is 4 pole? Will this setup be faster than my black jack on 5 s w x 642 prop??? I want it to be faster than a spartan lol. And alexgar what is cc 1515 is that a motor model ? And what is a t 180? Thanks in advance guys I appreciate the input and your time.Comment

Here is a video of my old(sold it) Gen with a 2200 4074 Leopard clone motor(it had the markings but was missing the cat logo) that I bought off the swap shop for like $50, I think. It was NIB. I bought it from Ray Schwan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbKpRtnc9sA Ran it with a T-180 and 4S, 2P, 5000mah 20C Turnigy packs. Looks fast enough?
I'm currently running a Turnigy 4082 1500kv motor in my Spartan and I love it. The Leoprard/Tacon/Hobby King XK motors all seems to be the same quality and are similar in power output/efficiency. For the money, I would go with the "lesser know" brands. Hobbypartz carries the Tacon motors but they are limited in KV. I ran a Tacon 2150KV and love it as well. HobbyKing carries quit a bit more selection in the "XK" brand Turnigy motors. Just type in "XK40" in the search box and the motors will appear. If you want better selection of motors with a broader KV range for that boat, you can beat OSE.Comment

That thing goes good. Did u ever gps it? And was it a reliable boat at that speed? What is a t 180? And I thought lower kv was slower and more torque ? And I will spend more money for a better more reliable motor that also has more speed . I would like to run on 5s 5000 mah 20 c packs . I will buy a new prop if needed as well. I want fastest reliable motor prop set up possible.Comment
