The garmin etrex, the 101 & 102 are great. The navibe is another good unit. Run a search for used ones on ebay.

I use the Garmin Forerunner 101. Around a $100 or so (or less). Smaller than most, runs on AAA cells. Works pretty good.

Take the wristband off, put some velcro on the back and stick it in your boat.
