Got a Dumas Hot Shot 45 hull - worth rebuilding?

Hello, I picked up a Dumas Hot Shot 45 hull (I think that's what it is from some quick seaching on google) for $5 at a swap meet yesterday. It's about 35 or 36 inches long.

The guy said it was built using epoxy and for some reason it's not waterproof because of that? Didn't seem to make sense to me, but I have no knowledge of wood hull boats. He said he was going to do a thin layer of fiberglass to fix it but never got around to it.

My question: Is this a valuable hull at all that would be worth my time to put extensive work into it? Wouldn't I be able to just lacquer or varnish the heck out of the hull after I got it looking good to "waterproof" it?

The hull needs a little bit of work, but overall it looks pretty good and completely salvageable to me. But if anyone can tell me otherwise, please do save me the time and work.

Would it be fine to do an FE outboard with this hull if I rigged up a sealed electronics area in it or would there be any concerns as I'm sure it was designed for nitro.

Thanks for any and all info to help me figure this thing out. I couldn't pass it up for $5, that's for sure. That's what happens at 90%-airplane swap meets!
    -Jeff

P.S. - I'm at work currently, but I hope to get some pictures up here in the next day or 2 to give you a better idea of what I've got on my plate here.

    Go for it !!!

    Hi Mate ,

IMHO the Dumas Hotshot .45 is a gr8 Outboard hull that can also be used in F/E configuration due it's breadth of 15 inches which should create a stable base . There are a lot of historical raceboats that you can base the paint scheme on , just go to fastonwater.co.uk for some research into boats that raced in Europe with similar lines , as the site is quite appealing & i am sure there where North American boats that utilised this style of hull that would be worthy of a scale replica of it . The only problem is that the Dumas .45 is a big hull that requires at least 6S IMHO , though i am sure you will be happy you stuck with building it to your own taste !!!

All the best in F/E R/C Boating ,

I was just reading your build thread, totally making me lean towards putting the time into this.... Yours is really nice.
I probably wouldn't go with an existing scheme - As neat as that would be, I just have no history of the real boats and so it'd be tough to choose one and I usually like to do something my own style. But you never know, maybe there's a scheme I really like out there that I'd be happy with.

But I do need to see if anyone has anything to say about the epoxy concerns and waterproofing and such before I dig into it. Also the cost of running gear is a bit intimidating. I'd run on 8s actually... Doing that in my 29" sprintcat & so I'll be able to get batteries to share between the boats that way & I can swap out parts if need be too. I'd still be looking at over $200 for the outboard, motor, and speed control. Definitely would run into the winter to do a build and afford the parts needed.

Keep an eye on the International Waters swap, lots of parted out nitro outboards by every manufacturer and size being sold, I think the competition keeps the prices down. If I remember right thats where my lower came from, it cost more to ship it than buy it! Think I saw an 11cc K&B lower for sale there this weekend.
E**Y is another source for outboards with junked power heads. I just missed out on a complete running prather 21 outboard mono for 100$ on Kijiji a few weeks ago.
There is also Hyperformance for new lowers and parts.
I think you can put that together for pretty cheap if time isn't an issue and you can wait for deals.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?
