Kyosho Jet Stream 800 Newb going brushless??

New Guy with very little local Hobbystore help. I'm from around Springfield MO and there are hardly any hobby stores around and even less dealing with Marine parts. So I turn to the web....

So I've dusted off my old JS and threw a Traxxas Blast brushed Trinity motor in it (P2Kpro) with an old Duratrak Streak ESC I swapped props with a Proboat 1.9 x 3.0" (PRB0152) It does a bit better and all but I want more. So I am planning on going brushless. I have a Hobbywing 2848 Seaking motor and a Hobbywing Seaking 90A ESC on it's way. I'm going to stick with 7.2 NIMH at first as I know this will not be the most stable Deep V then maybe series running it at 14.4 and going Lipo is a little out of budget right now. Do you guys think I'm wasting my time on this old bird or have you seen actual high speed numbers from this hull. I read the older tutorial on the Jet Stream but he just had a dual 5S setup I have my drive line all shimmed and aligned and am limiting the turn radius with the Tx. I do need turn fins installed but it is very hard to find a hobby store in my area that carries one or more setups for boats so we are just getting cooling hose and pickups and outlets in order. She weighs 5 ibs. w/ batt so ya it is def a tanker :) just let me know your opinions and if anybody is running one still I'd love to hear from you!

If you want to go brushless i wouldnt use the small motor you have mentioned. These boats can be converted but need a lower rpm setup due to the u-joint outdrive. I'd suggest a a Leopard 3674 1400kv on 4s lipo or 12-14 cell nimh and use a prop in the 45-47mm range. The boat will only be stable up to about 35mph or so. An ESC rated at a least 90 amps would work. You need to watercool the electronics as well.

I have a Jetstream 800 I have had for 20 years and its still in mint condition . At one time is was powered by a Astro flight cobalt 40 running on 28 scr1200 cells . she was a 30mph water boiler way back in the day . 5 LBS is far from a heavy boat so you are doing good . I have since gutted it and completely cleaned it up inside and out and repowered it by a 3670 quannum brushless motor . it sits on my boat shops wall unit here is a picture of it post yours also . Make-A-wakes suggestion is dead on I also powered mine with a 45mm prop . I usually side on the air of caution and might up the amperage on the esc just a wee bit I had a 120amp on mine .

I know I'm going to have to go water cooled but I don't think I can swing the twice as high $$ leopard. I have a 48mm prop. So will I have pretty slow acceleration or will it just wash out and heat up the motor? I have a reduction gear setup unlike Punishers direct drive. (The motor sits with the drive shaft forward) What about the Hobbywing 3660 I got it but it has a 5mm shaft so I planned on exchanging it should I go direct drive with it and how?

Ya Punisher put up your clean has hell JS and then ask me to post pics lol..... Oh wellIMG_0115.jpgIMG_0110.jpg Don't ask me for interior pics!! (If your really interested though I have Youtube vids (MR2NR15):)

I got her pretty beat up and just stripped her and painted her. Yes it is a police boat but the LEDs come on with the Tx and a siren also :). I am repainting next week and will put more pics up but don't think its going to be a whole lot different :).

Punisher What ESC box do you have? What are you using for your mount attachments? Silicone? Acrylic? Looks super clean :) Love the exit pipes!!!

Thanks so much for posting guys!!!

If you're going gear reduction you can use a 2500-3000kv motor..............a 3660 should get it going ok.

Here's one for half the price of the Leopard..............4 poles too.

I just used silicone for mount attachments to the hull here are some better pictures of the motor mount system , the esc box was a 100 amp 12 cell turnigy unit with an aluminum water block that I made to cool it , hey there is nothing wrong with you paint scheme if they all looked the same they would be boring . The mount and U-joint was bought from OSE list of parts

Lol then Ill have to drill out the gear for the huge 5mm shaft. Is there any easy way to get it down to 3?

You know it really wouldn't be to hard to go direct , Steven at ose has the mount for less that $10.00 and the U-joint that connects the boats 4mm shaft to the motors 5mm shaft . I could even mail you the alignment tool that you see in the second picture directly above in post #7

Well for now I guess I'm stuck with the higher RPM as the parts from OSE would be another 20$ w/s/h. I'll keep the 3060 and If I hate it or it I guess I will go the direct route. What about going Dual 2848's (3900kv) Would I need two ESC's? Or am I really shooting for the stars lol.

How much did you want for the alignment tool?

I get free shipping with Hobbypartz and I needed a Lipo/NiMh charger anyways.

Thanks for all your help guys and I should get a nice stockpile of motors now hehe.
