    sport 40 hull advice

In my basement I have a Phil Thomas SS45 with rudder/turn fin/strut/gas tanks, etc and nitro engine mounts installed with the turbine cowl. It is painted plain white and looks to be in very good condition.

I also have a brand new AC sport 40 still in the box without cowl. It has the original glassed in color.

Which should I keep to use with electric and which should I sell? Not planning on being a winning racer, just something to play with.

I have seen half a dozen PT SS45s converted to FE and they absolutely rock. Last weekend at a district race one Q Hydro heat had an SS45 and a Buaas rigger racing each other. Sure it was unfair, but the PT hydro held off the rigger for about three laps - it was an awesome heat!

I have seen a few AC sport 40s running nitro and they are certainly very good race boats. The AC glass work is second to none. I just have not seen one run with FE power.

I prefer to work with virgin hulls, not nitro-soaked hulls. But that's just me.

Where are you at in MI? We have a club in the Northen Metro Detroit area. Pond is located at 23 mile and Van Dyke.

Are you interested in selling the PT45?

      Later,
      Mike

In Beverly Hills. Would love to come by and I was contacted by someone in your club. Unfortunately I have a 10 and 12 year old and just cannot get away to the ponds after school (actually I am fortunate). Football, soccer, lego robotics, etc.......

However if anyone runs during the day I would be in. I dropped out of TTMBC 12 years ago when the 12 year old was born and also became a stay at home dad about 10 years ago. Lots of time on my hands but only between 8:30 and 3:30. Saturdays and Sundays are possible but again there are soccer and football games to work around. Is there an email list to get on?

Right now I am tending toward selling the brand new, in box, AC boat and keeping the PT with the hardware already there. However I think I may have to get a new cowl? The turbine really messes up the taping.

I've run both boats as a nitro boat. The Phil Thomas was my favorite, but both are good boats. The version I AC is hard to launch but the Version II fixed that. You don't need to tape up the whole cowl. Make radio boxes for the batteries, speed control, and radio gear. The motor won't have any problem with water if you spray it with Corrosion X after running. There are lots of outboards running that prove this. It will also run cooler in an open hull.

That sounds like a lot more trouble than simply buying a new "stealth" cowl. SS45 motor temps are not a problem even here in triple-digit Texas weather.....

We are close then... I am located in Clawson.

We race once a month on Sundays, but practice on Wednesday nights so that might be tough. I have no kids, but I still don't have enough time! Send me your email address and I will put you on my email list. I am usually the one opening the gates for practice on Wednesday nights.

We currently run a Q sport hydro class (Sport 40's) as a club. They run on 6S and both of the hulls you mentioned are raced.

WOW! I am in Warren. I am looking for guys to run with, along with my buddy. Sorry to derail, but we all need to hook up! One day of practice is not enough fun for me, I don't know about you. We got a spot, 23 van dyke(not the same one) if you want to meet up on a weekend. OR... if anyone knows a better place, we are always willing to test new waters. We are hardcore funrunners.lol

Another derail but hey you MI dudes. We're racing this Sunday if you want to come by and check us out. Supposed to be cold but it's our last race of the season.

Keep the Thomas. You'll want to add some structure. The AC runs great but it's not real happy at the speeds we're capable of.

Found out both boats were AC. Put them away a bunch of years back and forgot what I had.
