what is the best paint for wood boats?

im planning on spraying my rigger with a hvlp spray gun. what paint will give me the best finish? i plan in using more then one color so i will be doing some taping so dont need any peeling. plan on several clear coats to seal. thanks for the help.

    Hi Iceman ,

Just about completed my current Dumas tunnel project in black with spray - can enamel , just need to put a clear coat over when i'm satisfied with pinstriping etc. . There may be a better finish , but i don't want to be to fussy & it's pretty good anyway ....

All the best in F/E R/C Boating ,

Automotive paint will probably give you the best finish but it is expensive.

I am using rustoleum spray paint right now and regretting it. I guess if you were just putting on one color it would work fine but if you do a bunch of colors with taped designs in between colors and a clearcoat it stinks. The already applied layers wrinkle, even if you do wait the 24 hours inbetween.

In the past I used Omni auto paint from PPG and it is their inexpensive line and worked great with nitro fuel. I called today and they are replacing it with Shopline.

Klass Kote is highly recommended by the Nitro and Gas boat crowd. I recently used for the first time on my FE Phil Thomas hull (fiberglass). It was easy to use and very forgiving. Only downfall is they have a limited amount of colors to choose from.
