    paint

What do you guys do for painting at home. I know some send out to be painted with auto grade paints. But if I want to do it myself w/o purchasing very expensive paints what can I use?

I do have an entire paint system (HVLP) I use to finish wood furniture and I used to paint autos (lacquer, old style enamel). Auto grade paint has gotten awful expensive especially if I want to buy multiple colors (10!)

I am trying the rustoleum spray can route and I can get a good finish but I keep getting wrinkling even though I wait the required 24 hours between colors. I used the same 2x primer/color/clearcoat system.

    thanks

I gave up on Krylon/Rustoleum quite a while back. For FE's, I started using Duplicolor laquer. If you are set up to spray at home, this is a good, low price alternative.

Where do you get it? As far as I know you cannot get automotive grade lacquer anymore?

        I get mine here: https://www.autobodytoolmart.com/default.aspx
Look under 'paints and primers', then go to Duplicolor. I just ordered primer, candy base and some candy colors. They offer 3 different clears. This stuff is all prethinned in quarts, but pretty affordable @ $20.00 a quart.

          Try KlassKote.com
It is a epoxy paint that is 2 part. The first part is the color and the second part is the clear. You mix both parts 1 to 1 and it works really good. It looks just as good as my Automotive paint that I have tried and it is easier to spray since it is one application instead of using a base then a clear. Painting is by far the part about boats that I like the least. No matter how hard I try to get a nice paint job I end up screwing something up and my boats all end up looking like a 5 year old painted them. I keep saying that the next boat will beprofessionallyy painted but when I hear the price I end up doing it myself.

I think Duplicolor is available at just about every auto parts store, Seems to be the only brand widely available. You can get it in both lacquer and enamel as well as a number of special effects paints.
I use their stuff for accent colors then spray them with 2 part automotive clear urethane.
Krylon is absolute garbage, My buddy John on here did a few of his boats over the winter, he followed the directions to a T and still had problems.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

I will look for the duplicolor in spray cans.

I am painting those 4 Electrified boats and do not need to spend all that money on quarts of paint since I am painting 10 different colors plus primer and clear.

I do have to strip off about 10 coats of rustoleum from my boat.

              thanks

BTW I use dupont Nason clear coat, it's their budget line, a small can & activator wasn't much money. Does a great job even for a complete amateur painter. I've even used it on a couple of electric guitar bodies, those I wet sand and buff though, I don't with the boats.

I found that ACE hardware's Premium Enamel (I think that's what its called) is EXACTLY the same as the Duplicolor Acrylic Enamel but it's about $2-3 a can cheaper! That's what I use. I have had great luck with it. I also use the clear from the same line. Works for me!

I have learned the hard way about applying additional coats too soon. Regardless of what the label says, I apply several coats the first day and then I let everything dry for at least a week before applying more or adding the second color/trim.

I had horrible luck with Kylon. Slightly better with Rustoleum but still not good.

Went to Hobby Lobby and got some model paint. Now THAT worked awesome! $4-5 a can and if you dont need a lot of one color but many colors in total it might be a good choice.

I have learned the same thing. The stated 24 hours wait time is not enough in my basement. Now I turn the oven on low and cook for awhile once it already seems dry.

Pulling the hatch tape off is the true test of a good paint job. If paint peels you will need to strip and repaint. Primer and paint must be compatible for good bond.
