HK SS boat series 125A ESC

I read somewhere awhile back about people having issues with the hobby king "super simple" boat ESC, 125Amp.

Can anyone explain what the issue is/was and how it was fixed?

I have a brand new one and I dont want to put it in and smoked it right off the bat.

Also hopefully this thread with the relevant info will be easy for others to find.

    Hi there Basstronics.
Here's my experience with them & none of them were mine. all from other people in our club.

One guys wouldn't accept program. You could run through all the settings but it wouldn't load it & operate. This was brand new out of the box.

Another guy asked me to look at his. After a couple of runs it just wouldn't work. Just kept beeping. Tried everything i could think of but it won't fire up.

Then just the other weekend a guy turned up proud as punch of his new Genisis cat. The motor just chattered back & forth. I had a play around with all the connections & such & got it to fire up. He taped up the hatch & the boat was on fire before he reached the water. The ESC had detonated. And that was only on 3s.

From what I've heard around the traps the cooling plate is sometimes touching the three blobs of solder on the three motor wires on the PC board. It might be worth taking the heatshrink off & having a look before you power it up.

    Hope this helps a bit.
    Paul.

OK Paul thanks for the info. That info jogged my memory and I remember reading that last bit about the cooling plate and solder.

I am a bit apprehensive about opening it up since I dont have any heat shrink here to fit it. So I got to order some from China- which will take 2-3 weeks to get here maybe longer.

Offshore Electrics sells heat shrink tube in the size you need. I currently have the hk ss 125 in my apparition. I run it on 4s and the only issue I have had is heat! Programing worked fine and the esc has ran good, I just think its too small for my application. I should have forked out 10 more bucks for the 200... But now that im broken in on boating I think I will move on to something better like a sea king.

I havent had good luck with the heat shrink from OSE. I always get holes burned in it or it simply splits. I use a lighter to shrink it up. The stuff from HK is more forgiving, thicker and more pliable.

I have almost a meter of shrink and I can send you some, I can measure it out based on the SS 200 and send you some, it'll fit in an envelope so shipping shouldn't be a problem.
both of my SS 200's (same as suppo) had the heatsink sitting on the output wires. One time I had the motor stutter too, I just shiut everything down and booted the ESC and radio again, seemed to work fine.

Never use an open flame to shrink shrink tubing. Thats why you have split it and burned holes in it. Home depot has cheap heat guns. Gently use the heat to shrink it and dont get too close or the same thing will happen. I picked a gun for $20 and its invaluable to me.

Thanks boatguy. I will PM you my address tonight. Let me know your pay pal and I will send a few bucks to take care of it.

I didnt really want to buy a heat fun to shrink wires but I guess Im going to have to.

a hair dryer works too, mine gets hot enough I can't hold the component i'm shrinking, mine is new but sometimes the older ones get really hot.

Hair dryers are for girls. Unless you found it at a yard sale for cheap, or your mom gave it to you, be man and get a heat gun. I understand youre throwing another option out there, but you can find a heat gun thats probably cheaper than a hair dryer.

Got it for Xmas when I had hair, now it's buzzed and the thing really heats up so I use it for shrinking.

Stopped by harbor freight and picked up a nice looking heat gun for $13 on sale.

                              PM sent boaterguy, thanks again!
