    Inrunner and Outrunner motors

I am sure most of you know the difference and which is best for marine application, but since I am new, I don't. Could someone explain the difference and advantages or disadvantages of each? I had heard that with an outrunner the outside of the case spins, but that doesn't look like the case in some of the pictures I see.

I remember asking this question a year ago. I was advised and have since learned that they are not the best choice in most cases. They offer loads of torque but @ low rpm. Most boats would have to turn much to big of a prop to use the torque. That results in torque roll and prop walk. The exception seems to be small outriggers. The outrunners are the bl motor of choice in that app it would seem. Hope this helps ya out.

Thanks, my only boat is a BJ26 BL that hasn't seen water yet (just Ice) I was going to run it stock for a while then try to upgrade the esc and motor for more speed.

Good idea man. Run it untill your comfortable with drveing and then look for some upgrades. With that package I'd look for hardware upgrades first

Outrunners are getting more popular in boats since they started making higher KV motors. They still have a cooling problem, since the windings are in the middle of the motor and the rotor rotates around them. They work well in airplanes since the prop blows air through it for cooling. The windings are on the outside of the rotor on an inrunner and easier to water cool.
