    another villain build- help.

well i have an old villain 4 Im gonna modify. i have already ordered a water cooled motor mount and I am in the process of removing the inner compartment. i will be laying down a layer of fiberglass along the length of the hull and i plan to double it where the motor mount will be set. i will also be adding light ply or thin carbon fiber plate as a transom doubler. i am still unsure of what rudder i will use and I am clueless on the drive setup. I'm not sure if i wanna run a solid 4mm shaft or if i should go flex. cost wise flex is going to be more expensive because of the more parts it requires but it will be more adjustable. but im running on a low budget
the biggest problem im having is where do i mount the motor? if any of you villain vets have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. and ill post pix here as work on it progresses.
ps i will be running this on a rimfire 1200kv outrunner to test. i had it laying around and it fit the bill. im still looking for an esc but i plan to run 4s. maybe 6s if the temps stay down.

I happen to have two Brushless Villain IV's up and running.............love 'em. Both 6s, one with a Feigao 14XL and one with a Neu 1515 1.5y. They were early FE efforts of mine since i loved the scale look of the Villain, plus wanted the challenge of making them go faster than folks say they should/can.

Here are just a few of many photos i have of builds. They arent real pretty inside and i didint use glass, but they run solid and i have hit 41 mph with one and 40 with the other.

I went with a center mounted rudder on each, one has a straight 4mm shaft with a graupner flex inside to get the stuffing tube nearly flat in the hull(pictured below). The other has a 4mm flex drive and a stinger.

    Couple of action shots too

I have seen your work on here. Kinda my inspiration to mod this thing. Which drive system do u prefer having used both? And how far forward did you mount your motor? I'm trying to get a base line for cog

Center of the motor from the inner transom is 9 inches on one and 7.5 inches on the other. I just use the batts to adjust cog from there. I actually like both drives, but believe it or not the straight 4mm shaft seems "tighter" overall if that makes sense. Glad to see you building one......should be fun!

I used 5/32 steel shaft i bought here local and had a shop thread it for me......did 3 out of one piece i think.....been a while. You may be able to find 4mm threaded somewhere online. I also used the stock villain stuffind tube and brass bushings on it. Steven sells the Graupner flex last time i checked here on OSE.

im gonna track down some 5/32 steel shaft and some glass matt this week hopefully have her in the water next week. i may copy your turn fin system while im at it. im gonna attempt to to use the stock u joint as a coupler to keep cost down for now. ill be ordering a flex coupler when i get a different motor.

So I picked up a proboat rudder, a 3/16 drive dog, and a peice of 5/32 music wire. Gonna gut the hull this afternoon and hopefully get everything mocked up. I havent decided weather or not to glass the hull. Im not gonna be running saws and where we run its mostly calm so I think its just un needed weight. Will 5 min epoxy be enough to hold the motor mount in? Im using a water cooled one from here.

I used 5 min epoxy on both of mine. First i removed the inner hull and got to the actual bottom hull. I cleaned it thoroughly then roughed up the area for the mount to be epoxied to. Added weight is actually ok in these hulls as they are stock with twin 550's and two 6 cell nimhs. I added 6 ounces to my red one and it liked it for some reason.

well i have been busy just unable to post progress. i have gutted the hull, epoxied in the motor mount and stuffing tube. doubled the transom (actually tripled, i sandwiched it.), mounted the rudder (proboat bj26 nitro rudder) and mounted the servo (hot glued for now)

im getting the prop shaft threaded today and it should be rtr by thursday!.
o btw Make-a-Wake i kinda borrowed your turn fin idea, hope you dont mind.

first run on the lake was successful! i need a new motor now though. the outrunner was only rated for 4s lipo and it gave its all on 6s but it smells cooked.... i didnt get to gps it before the U-joint blew up but i have a flex coupler on the way. gonna add trim tabs and see if i can get her to level out.
still trying to get it to track straight. what prop would you run on this?
