    Anyone ever tried this?

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to put a 3 phase transformer between the motor and the esc to ramp up the voltage to the motor?
I was thinking it could be worth looking into for lower voltage saw boats if it worked and you could keep the weight down. You could use some of the big motors with lower kv's in the lower voltage classes if it worked.

The biggest hurdle in using that setup would be the rather large size of a transformer to accomplish it. By using a step up (or down) transformer it would need to be able to handle high current loads as well. That means thick windings rated to the corresponding amperage. Just my 2 cents.

Heavy is correct, inefficient and there is a bit of a problem electrically with that.....BLDC motors are not running on 3 equal phases like AC
motors remember the ESC is feeding full DC voltage to only 2 legs at a time.

I simulated on labview and multisim and the inductance in the motor and transformer make it look very close to 3 phase. But I am thinking the only way you could make it work in a boat is to make the transformer cores small without saturating. Another thing is I have made 5kw dc/dc converters with coupled inductors that are only about 5 pounds with some very large heatsinks for low airflow areas. So I am guessing I could get it to at least half that by using water-cooling. Which would have a similar result.
