GPS or Radar gun? + a slow start....

I have ordered a ton of new RC equipment and almost all of it is here.... I ordered a AC MC, lipos, charger, etc..... Just to find out that my old 60w soldering iron was messed up. Luckily I found a nice deal on a Craftsman 400w soldering gun. I shouldn't have any problems soldering with that bad boy!!! Anyway, Just wanted to vent a little because I have had all this gear for the better part of a month now and between work and having to order odds and ends that I originally forgot about, I have not been able to run my Motley Crew one time.....

Well, with the soldering iron coming tomorrow I should be on the water within a few days. The one last thing I need is a speed measuring device. I used to use a GPS and they worked well, but I see Bushnell has radar guns for around 75$!!! From the reviews, they seems to work OK, But i was wondering what you guys think is best to use. A single Garmin GPS or just buy a radar gun. Seems like the radar gun could be fun not just with RC boats....

Here is the radar gun I am looking at... http://www.opticsplanet.net/busspeedrads.html

Also, FYI this is the soldering gun I ordered... The mother of all soldering guns. Found it on a whim for 30 bucks shipped!!! http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...2&blockType=G2

Radar guns are no good if you're running by yourself.

I bought a Garmin eTrex Ledgenc C on ebay for around $80 shipped. It's quite small, light & waterproof. Cheap radar guns are OK but some will give false cuz of water reflecitng the radar. Like rumdog said, don't try to drive & use a radar gun at the same time. JIM

We did a lot of tests with a high end radar gun and a Garmin GPS. In a very fast accelerating rigger, the GPS always read a few mph less than the radar gun's peak speed. This was around 100 mph, so a more ordinary situation I bet both are equally accurate. The new GPS units have higher update rates as well. I think the main difference was GPS lag with our test conditions.

We have also compared GPS speed to timed speeds through a trap. They are very close even though the GPS shows the changes in speed as you make your run.

I have dedended GPS for years and still think it is very accurate. The problem is you need to sustain a speed to get a true reading. You cant just blast off 100mph in a 100 foot range...........it will not read correctly. I have tested my on board gps systems in my race car to a Garmin and an Eagle tree hooked up to a battery and they are always within 1-2 mph. This holds true for 50 mph or 150mph..........they are almost right on. If I get to attend the Top Speed Shoot out at Loring Air Force base with my car this year I will test it to 175mph .....I hope!!!!!!!!!! This way I can compare their mph to my GPS reading.
