Not quite right. Straightaway competition pits race boats against the clock over a 330 foot straight course - not unlike Bonneville. The boat (usually with extreme power/prop) is timed in two consecutive passes, and average is used to determine if the boater has set a new speed record for the class of boat he is racing. Some boats can actually turn very well, and gas and nitro boats HAVE to turn well. Turning ability is not so vital with FE boats.
Some boaters use their GPS to measure their highest speed and post it on the internet. Often these boats use extreme setups which cannot be run for more than a few passes at a time.
