    Attention Cat Owners

    Cat setup question:

On cats with the rudder offset, What is the best distance from the transom to run? I have seen setups where the trailing edge of the rudder is right about the start of the drive dog. I have seen where the leading edge of the rudder is right about the mid point on the prop hub. What is best? I have been trying with failure, to get a rudder the right size with a 4" bracket. That will get the leading edge to mid hub. 2 purchases later, and either the blade is too big or the bracket footprint is too big. I will be mounting the bracket to the sponson transom, not the overhang.

    Setting up an H&M M1 Supercat S 26.5"

    Thanks!!

    Hi Danny,

I sure others will chime in but, I use the FDM 21EGSRA on my single motor cats. The leading edge of the strut is 1 1/2" from the transom. The leading edge of the rudder is 1 1/2" BEHIND the trailing edge of the strut. The rudder is in clean rudder and affords me easy left and right turning for offshore racing. It also allows clean thrust with no prop wash against the rudder.

I hope this will help you a bit.

I had one of those Fine Design struts on my Mono and it performed great. I sold it and now I have a Drifter S that it would of worked perfect on.

A new FD strut is the pricey and FD doesnt have the best rep. I was thinking of using a MG29 strut with the Kintec offset rudder adapter. I understand Proboat is coming out with a new offset MG strut next month. Maybe I'll wait and see what it looks like.

Got a spare FD strut you want to sell John??

I have an FD strut/rudder on my Bittburger cat as well and it works ok once I over come the prop torque. The leading edge of the rudder is even with the end of the prop shaft. But then again this boat does not turn well, it's basically a straight line boat at WOT and turns are quite slow.

Same here. This setup on my former H&M Drifter S ( now FE Wannabe's) , which is essentially the same hull as the Supercat, works well and can be configured for left or right rudder placement.
