    1/5th hydro burns up electronics

I converted my 46" Purple Light hydro from a RCMK Evo gasser to electric power with RED LEOPARD BM-5682-1090kV MOTOR. IS THE MOTOR THE PROBLEM OR TOO BIG OF PROPS???

    STEUPS
    1. Seaking 80A-HV speed controller (good for up to 12S Lipos)
Two DRAGON RED 4800mAh 45C batteries in series (29.6V)
Octura 61mm+- three blade prop (#?)
RESULTS: fried one Lipo cell. Tried a second battery - same result. Both dead. Tested speed contl. At home - smoked it & burned thru shrink wrap at lead "A"

2.. Seaking 180A-HV speed controller (good for up to 6S Lipos)
One DRAGON RED 4800mAh 45C battery
Used the Chinese 68.6mm two blade prop came with boat cut down to 54.4mm.
RESULTS: First run OK for a minute then silver soldered Deans plug melted off.
Second run with new battery & plug. wires melted thru foam, Deans plugs & in three places.

    Gonna try this setup next:
    SeaMonster BL3650 2300KV motor (34K RPM @ 14.8V)
    Seaking 180A-HV speed controller
One DRAGON RED 4800mAh 45C battery
    Octura X447-3 prop

Any help or suggestions to get my hydro up to gas powered speeds are welcome. THX-JIM

    Setup 1 + 2:
    - way too big a prop for that motor! You were probably pulling well over 200 amps with that one.
    - you don't have enough ESC. You should have a 180-200 amp ESC, 80 amps is not near enough.
    - not enough battery. In theory the pack is good for 215 amps continuous, but some cheap off-brand packs don't deliver what the label says. You should be running 2P and quality cells. Cheap cells don't last if asked to supply larg amps for very long.
    - not enough connector. Deans are good for 50-60 amps, not 200. Get rid of them and go with 5.5mm or 6mm gold bullets.
    - the motor Kv is way too high, it guarantees a burn down.

Setup 3 - don't try it! 4S is not enough power for a heavy 46" hull, the motor is too small with too high a Kv, and the prop too big. You'll have another fire....

Before spending more money on this boat, ask other experienced 10S racers what they suggest. I race 10S boats, here are my suggestions.

Motor - Neu 2215/750Kv or Leopard 5692/730Kv or Lehner 3060/750Kv
ESC - Castle HydraICE 200HV or similar quality controller
Packs - 10S2P/35-45C/4500-5000 mAh battery, better quality than what you ran. I like Hyperions or ThunderPowers, but regardless - no cheap Chinese packs if you want gas boat performance.
    Prop - x462 two blade

Set up right this will give you 60 mph with great acceleration and plenty of run time for a one mile race heat. There are other ways to get there, but this is what works for most of the guys in our club.

Deans have gotta go, even the 6mm might be pushing it, most 10S or more setups go with 8mm, probably a good idea in case you ever want to upgrade.
Those motors are too high KV for a big boat, a good 8-12S setup will be better, and those props should get smaller too, start small and work up.

        too big for props ... try 180a esc + 6s + BL5692-1090kVwith X447 or x450

I'd personally put a HV in if I was running 6S, or at least something rated higher than 6S, if you are going for full out power, an 8S or even 10S setup would be nice if you could squeeze it in, a little more expensive, but tons of power.

Did he say they were parallel? 29.6volts is 8s. If they were wired in series that's 16s. That would have baked on the bench I would think. If the second setup was run on the same 8s pack or packs the ESC would not be happy. That 2300kv 4s setup will let out the magic smoke really quick in a boat that big.

Go with Fluids recommendations. I'm really impressed with my 2215 motor. Don't hesitate to go with the 8mm plugs. Worth the effort. Deans were fine when we were limited to 50 amps by brushed motors.

These things are much easier to figure out if you have an experienced big boat guy to guide you. Trial and error is expensive.

              Setup 1. used two 4S 4800mAh 45C batteries in series for 29.6V & a 80A HV controller.
              Setup 2. only used one 4S 4800mAh 45C & a 180A controller.

I replied but may have screwed up, so I'll reply again.

                Thanks for the advice.
                1. I'll buy a Castle 200HV controller - any suggestions for a good price online?
                2. Will get the Lepoard 5692 730KV motor.
                3. Think I will double up (2 -, 2 +) the batt/ESC wires with 5mm connectors. Was alerady using single 5mm gold connectors.

Next baots are an Aeromarine 42" Sprint Cat & a 51"+X-Hydro. Any setup suggestions for these?

                THX, JIM
