DV turn fins.

I am about to install turn fins on my Toysport Triton and am curious to know if the current curved back shape on many fins has any advantage.
In the past I have used straight fins with the leading edge at 90 degrees and others angled back slightly ( like a hydro turn fin ) but I have never used these curved style.
Is there a logical reason for this curved shape on the leading edge or is it just 'fashion' ?

Graham I dont know if it makes much difference weather straight or curved back. But I will tell you I have found a long fin realy helps turn in my Triton at speed 45mph plus. I was using these. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...d=ose-monofins but have found through trail and error that fins of the same shape but approx 1 inch longer ( home made ) work best. If your baot is around the 40mph mark these OSE ones are great but as motor size increases with cell size you will find it spins out at speed.

I was going to power my Triton with an 8XL ( because I already have a couple ) and 12 x 3800 cells, but I dont think the cells could hack it.
To make this hull go I figure on about 1000 watts but with only 12 cells this would mean at least 70 amps and only give 3 minutes of run time.
Plan B is to use a 12XL and 18 cells which should reduce the amps to under 50 and give at least 4 minutes run time.
I like the idea of higher voltage and less amps for the same watts and performance.
If I win the lottery I will treat myself to a Neu and lipos but in the mean time I will stick with the cheapo motors and my NiMH cells.

Good luck, with a 1521 1.5d and 5s lipo mine runs high 50's . Have tried 6s and it is toooo fast.

Lipos Vs sub C

I agree,
I was running a couple 3800 sub c packs and thought I was in great shape they were 9 cell packs after about 3 minutes my boat goes dead in the water (NICE) after I finally retrieved it to see what happened the back of the packs burned the connector strip and the back two cells on both packs (they were factory made) I was not happy! I switched out to two 2200mAh lipos and they WAY out perform any sub C pack that I have used and I am not pushing all that weight around either, However I did have to adjust the C. G. a bit but that all was worth it, my boat really hauls now and I can't wait to get a gps on it or radar or something!

I am running a Fieago 540 xl 2084 kva, and I am actually thinking of getting a little slower motor because I burned mine on the work bench after some mods I did to aide in handling. I made my own turn fins for my boat and they work fine they are straight and curved toward the bottom like a knife and I sharpened them like that too because that is how I thought they should be I don't know if there is a better way or not.
