Long time no chat. I have been using a Garmin Forerunner 201 for awhile now and I do like it. It seems to be fairly accurate, as GPS units go, as long as I make sure I can connect to enough satellites before placing it in the boat. The small size and it being waterproof are a plus as well. FYI, I am not running any carbon fiber in any of my boats. Let me know if you are looking for more specific info.
Have a good one...

The first gen consumer handheld GPS's had no where near the sensitivity that the recievers have today. Even with the external antenna, handheld GPS's fifteen years ago couldnt receive satellite signals through a bimini top on a boat. Today I can pick up a half dozen satellites through the roof of my house. I second the Garmin Forerunner 201. Great little GPS. Similar to the 101 only with rechargeable batteries.
Thanks all. I am trying to use with a CF hull, which is why I'm asking about the external antenna. I guess the best method is to strap to the top of the lid, but I don't know how well it would fair in a crash. It would have to be some substantial straps.

Paddy just tapes it down with hatch tape - lots of it!
