    Irresponsible Boat Running

Was at Lake Ronkonkoma in New York running my electric boat. When a stranger came up to me and told me about a guy running his electric green geico boat, he appartently was running very irractically and irresponsible and was pissing off alot of people who were fishing off the dock by cutting off their fishing lines on purpose, which in turn to do this he had to totally go out of his way to do. The cops were called and he was asked to leave. I really like to know if this guy is a member here and why he would do such a thing and give boaters a bad name and abusing a lake that we have the privelage to run at every once in a while. This is not good actions and all it does is give the responsible model boaters a bad name. Chris

Good topic Chris. There are too many (one is too many) purposely irresponsible R/C boaters around. But there are responsible boaters who just don't think too. I have seen guys run their boat close to full size boats, swimmers and fishermen and not think anything about it. But the swimmers and fishermen didn't like it one bit and I would not blame them.

If there are others at the pond where you are running your boat, take a moment to step back and think about how your running may affect their enjoyment of the water. They may like to watch you, or they may consider the noise and splashing disturbing. We all share the water, but R/C boaters will be the first ones banned if it comes to that.

Here is my general rule of thumb. If anyone is at the lake, i do not run. I know when guys are fishing early in the morning they just want peace and quiet and i would as well. But.....if i am there first than I have priority. It is amazing how many guys will just come over in there boat or on shore with their fishing lines and just cast right where im driving.

I usually talk to the fishers and do all my prep work as long as I can in hopes they have been there all day and were ready to leave and if they were to hang around for a little show out of respect I never just run without checking first after all no motorized vehicles are aloud there with the exception of electrics but I doubt they meant 50+ mph rc boats

The small lake we run at is sanctioned by the city to let us run there. But they also allow fishermen to fish off shore. They don't like us one bit, but we have the right to be there. They have posted signs so that the fishermen don't cast in our launch area and we have to stay within the bouees. For the most part it usually stays peaceful but once in a while one of them will walk by and complain about how we scare off all the fish. He'll, if anything we scare all the fish towards shore since we run in the center, in a circle! I cut a guys line once that managed to cast further than normal. He came over an told me I had cut his line and was pretty pissed off. I apologized and offered to pay for his hook and lour. His attitude totally changed and accepted my apology.

I also run at a smaller local pond. It's filled with huge turtles, up to 18" round! I usually just do testing there. Most people like my boats but I get one or another that complain about me "harassing" the ducks. As soon as the ducks see and hear my boats they head towards shore and stay clear of my boats. If I see a duck, I slow down or turn away from the ducks area. But people are not supposed to feed the ducks ad there are signs clearly posted because the ducks won't migrate!

IMO, it's all about respect and common sense wether it's animals, people or property.

Not to offend anyone but I belong to a club that has permission to run electric boats on a lake every Sunday. Folks just want to get a closer look which I understand but they have no idea of the danger that they are placing them selves in along with their children. There is a big difference between a boat that does 5 - 10 mph and one that does 50+ mph. Because the boats are rather small compared to a canoe or kayak they are in, they don't realize that it has the same effect as getting hit by a torpedo on a full sized ship.

especially once the esc and radio have booted up, or are in the process, lots of little kids want to touch, and 35000 rpm and sharpened blades don't mix with "why is the prop so shiny?"

This is the reason I got out Of boating. The pond we run on is used by many including canoe paddlers, stand up paddling fishermen etc. I was always though to respect others if they are their first. Even though I'm there first I still would get the occasion people that would come and practice castin (yep just lead no hook or bait) right where I'm running. I too am an avid fisherman and paddle boarder and when it's just you running a rc boat it's a loose loose situation. I got tired of finding the pond empty to use so I basically gave up.
