Thats true for higher AC voltage operations. One thousand AC volts can jump an inch of open air gap between leads. A layer of conductive grease is not going to be an issue there. In RC applications we are operating with square wave DC volts emulating a AC signal and at potentials only in a max 50 volt and lesser range. There is a conductive grease electricians use when installing big breakers and large line fuses in transmission lines.
I was a licensed electrician myself during the early 80's. Lots of commercial work under my belt. These days I play with Hydrophones, Transducers and Arrays of all types in my underwater work. Low voltage connectors need to be very clean. We operate with voltages up to 1200kv and frequencies from 1k up to 100k. Power in excess of 15k watts. Carbon, dust, fingerprint oils and other contaminants are my number one enemy. It changes my impedance measurements. Not to mention it changes the frequency response of my sensors. Some of my ITT Cannon connectors cost over a thousand bux each.
Trust me when I say keep your connectors clean. You guys dont want to listen, thats another story. I'm not singling you out Paul, no offense made towards you. Its just your comment was a good example to use and convenient.
