Phil Thomas Hydro, bouncing around at full throttle..

I ran it today for the first time and it ran ok. It's fast but it bounced around at full throttle. This is my first Hydro build, my COG is right where it should be, but still it bounces around. What is this typical of in a Hydro, ie: Turn fin, strut depth and/or angle adjustments? Etc? Any suggestions are much appreciated. thx

what prop, strut depth (measured from the bottom of the hull to the bottom of the strut), strut angle (aprox.) are you running?

all this is needed to get you set up for a good starting point.

    Thanks

My PT Stealth hopped bad my first time out. A strut adjustment settled it right down. As the guys above said we need more details. If your setup is close to mine I can give you some measurements to use as a starting point.

Hydra 240, NEU 1515 2D/S (2060kv), 4s2p, heavy 5050mah packs, speedmaster .21 hydro round style strut, Speedmaster mini rudder, Aquacraft-2mm turnfin, strut at 5/8" from the bottom of the hull to the bottom of the strut, strut-- maybe -2 degrees of angle, COG currently balances at 16.2" to 16.5" depending on how far forward I place the packs. .150 swiging a X645, detoungued, balanced and sharp as hell.

I'm running the .21 flat bottom strut and mine measures 3/4" from bottom of hull to bottom of strut with a degree or two negative. Me and several others have had good results with the M445 props. I have a M545 and a M645 but have not had a chance to try them yet. My Cog is within Phils recommended setup range, I can check it exactly in the morning if needed. I am also running the AQ UL1 turn fin, the thickest version. There is a video of one of my earlier runs on youtube under Phil Thomas Stealth.

I think I'm going to have to run a slightly larger or higher pitch prop than the norm, a few less rpm's on the 2D than the 1y or Leopard 2200kv. I'll adjust my strut as you have it. I think PT recommends 15.5"-16.5" COG per his instruction. I will try the smaller 440/3 tomorrw as well as my M445. I have a few less rpm's than the standard 2200kv for this hull so I may need to prop up a little?

Thanks for your help again Mark,
              Jarrett

Good luck and if I can help at all let me know. Mine still needs a little more fine tuning too. Keep us updated.

What do you mean by "bounced around"? Bow up and down, rocked back and forth on the sponsons, or what? Knowing this will help to diagnose the problem. Place the boat on a flat surface resting on the sponsons and the strut. Adjust the strut so it is flat on the surface, no angle. Run the boat and see what it does. You may, or may not, need to lower the strut.

Your turn fin is probably adjusted wrong. Tilting the fin up causes the boat to run tighter and tilting it down caused it to run loose. I bet you have the fin tilted too far downward. Reading the UL-1 manual will help you. You will also need a setup board. m445 works verygood

Water conditions play a major roll also. Choppy water is bouncy.

Yes bow goes up and down. I'll make the strut adjustments tonight, thanks Jay.
