    Stuffing tube to Strut Question

    All,

I picked up a used Mean Machine to try my hand at learning about building and running cats. I'm planning on a 1518, 5S2P, and a SK-180. I've looked at a lot of build threads on here and picked up great info. I'm going to start reinforcing the hull tomorrow.

As to my question - the original stuffing tube has a one size smaller insert where it meets the strut. This I believe was made to fit into the nose of the strut. I've read some builds where the stuffing tube was cut short of the strut and the teflon was run into it, then sealed with shrink wrap. I guess the main purpose of setting the boat up that way is to allow easier strut adjustment. Is there any advantage to running the tube into the strut?

Also, the strut has lead/teflon bushings installed. I was thinking of pulling them out and using a Speedmaster strut bushing similar to the ones used on the stingers. Is there any advantage one way or the other?

    Thanks

Do you know what type of strut is on your MM, and what diamater stuffing tube? Maybe post some pictures?

Speedmaster struts will take a 1/4" OD stuffing tube directly into them. With that much power, I would run the brass stuffing tube all the way to the strut - don't leave any teflon-only section. You should have enough flexibility in the brass tubing to give the necessary adjustment.

With the power you're proposing, you'll want to run a 3/16" flex shaft, so you can use a 1/4" stuffing tube without a teflon liner and you should be set.

If you use teflon bushes, you just need to run enough stuffing tube into the front so is has a small clearance to the front bush. If you use a Speedmaster bush, you will need to run the 1/4" tube almost right through the strut to support the bush. If the teflon bushes are in good condition, I'd leave them there.

      Scott,

Thanks for the comments. I tried to get some pict - camera died and have had not time to play with anything lately. I believe the strut is an Aeromarine billet AL strut. The primary stuffing tube is one size larger than the 1/4 .014 tubes (I originally thought it was a 1/4 and stepped down) and the tube going into the strut is 1/4.

I'm planning on the 3/16th flex, either a 150 or 187 cable. I'll keep the bushings that are already in place but may likely go to a full 1/4 tube instead of the 2 piece.

      Thanks
