distance between motor collet and stuffing tube

What is too much and what is too little? right now i have about an inch from the end of my collet to the stuffing tube and it seems as though the flex is getting a bit of whip?? doesn't sound very good when i spin it on the bench.

I try to keep less than a 1/2" between the collet and stuffing tube. Enough to get the collet on and off with a little room for play. If you've already mounted the motor mount and stuffing tube you can remedy this by stepping down to the next size brass, cutting off a few inches, then placing inside the stuffing tube and gluing in place. Making sure not to get glue on the inside of the brass of course =)
