Ducks, fisherman and boats running up on shore

We've all heard it before, but it's worth repeating. We need to be careful and follow the safety rules put forth by our organizations.

We have a small pond in Scottsdale that is designated a "boating" pond on Sundays. It's been this way for decades. It's too small to hold races, but it works for test/tune sessions for gas/nitro/FE. It's located right along a city bike path and gets quite a bit of traffic. A few weeks ago, a duck got hit by a gas cat going full-tilt. It was witnessed by a lady that, from what I've heard (I wasn't there), started screaming that it was a deliberate, malicious act. The police were called.

A few of the club members took a pro-active approach and contacted the city the next day to discuss the incident. The city has allowed us to run boats for nearly 30 years and we have a great relationship with them.

We're lucky. I bet an event like this could have easily been "the last straw" in some municipalities.

Before the meeting, the city did some checking around and found out that there were some complaints against us. We got the information in advance and one of our guys developed and printed off an agenda for all in attendance, addressing the complaints that have been issued against us. Here they are. Sound familiar?

    Endangering wildlife
    Snagging fisherman lines
Wild boats running up on shore
    Noise

We had a very pro-active discussion of these items and established a game plan to address them. In our specific case, the pond we use for testing has no sign stating that it's a model boat pond, listing rules, time of use, etc. They will discuss creating a sign that includes items just mentioned, as well as specific safety rules that must also be followed. Using a pitman, failsafes, giving wildlife right of way, etc and being affiliated with, in our case, NAMBA.

Seems like pretty simple stuff, but it's easy to let your guard down. And if you do, you may be in the same situation we were just in.

Please-don't let your guard down. Make sure anytime you are running that you're following the safety rules that our organizations have in place. It will go a long way towards the respect our hobby deserves, both in your own back yard and for the entire country. Canada, too!

One thing I love about Michigan. Unlimited places to run without being harassed. Sucks that you guys have to deal with the whiny public.

Newland: are you talking about the pond where everyone launches on the small end and drives out to the big area? If memory serves it is parallel to one of th main roads in Scottsdale.
use to love watching some of the "rollerbladers" come by in their all together. :-)

            Kudos Dave,

Thanks for the reminder. ANYONE whom participates in RC boating activity, not just sanctioned clubs and sanctioned club events, needs to be reminded of this from time to time. Both NAMBA and IMPBA have the rules for a reason; I would encourage all who like boats and isn’t affiliated with a club to take the time to check out your local club. They can help provide an APPROVED safe place to run and also provide the proper equipment to retrieve/run your boats safely. Not to mention, learning about boats from each other.

Guys these things are dangerous and fast. They easily have the possibility l to do some damage. Wildlife, spectators, racers, and property are all at risk when running boats. It takes all of us to be safe!

            Thanks
            Mike

You'd have to be one HELL of a good driver to hit a moving duck with a fast gas cat on purpose...

Definitely good advice going so far though! Years ago my dad and I got harassed running a gas mono in a big section of river. The guy walking his dog claimed it was too loud and was disturbing the peace... too bad we couldn't hear him over the tractors cutting all the park grass right behind us, and the people use line trimmers on the tall grass closer to the river.

After we pointed out that the tractors and line trimmers were much louder he tried a couple other reasons (you could kill a fish, etc) before giving up and leaving.

Through the whole time we were civil, and even stopped running the boat until after he was long gone. A few times prior to this we had police go by and stop to watch and come talk with us, but never about anything but how cool they thought it was, and where they could get one if they wanted to.
Light travels faster than sound, so people may appear to be bright until you hear them speak.

It's like anything else... some people will love it... others will hate it. I'm lucky enough to live on a private lake but I do run at a local pond from time to time. (Luckily not much foot traffic there either)

I think the problem with parks and public areas is that the general population gets into a "groove" with what goes on. As the minority (running boats) obviously the people set in what they do will have a problem with it.. especially older, more conservative folks. I can totally see why they'd feel someone running a boat could cause annoyance.. just gotta have patience! But like everyone else said... only thing to do is be polite and enthusiastic about what youre doing.

Yes- Indian School Road and Hayden. And yes again for the rollerblade/jogger/runner traffic! Except for Spring Training time when the Giants do their morning jog through there...

Ball is right on with his post and that's really why I wanted to post this. It doesn't matter where you run...just be careful, follow our organizations rules and use good judgment, for your own sake and for the sake of our hobby as a whole.

Wrong Attitude. With a statement like that a club would never be able to use a facility safely.

Hey our stuff is dangerous. Dave is spot on. We must follow rules or people get hurt.

                      Thanks for the info Dave.

Where i live in the Uk there is a boat club but its for small slow scale stuff and wont let FE on their pond. I have been asked to move from various places and even contacted the council to find out where i can run legaly but i never had an aswer from them so i dont want to start ranting back at people because im not sure im even allowed to run there!!! Is there any UK law about running boats?

                          Dave,
Are you sure it wasn't a loon and not a duck? (inside jk)

Fences and protective barriers are a must. Seen too many launches land farther from the shore than anyone had expected.

Our home pond is too small but at least we have some control of our surroundings with the cyclone fencing. Walk ups tend to check in with us before they just mosey down to the water.

We struggle with the wild life from time to time too. As difficult as it is to accept, we need to give the critters a wide birth. Even if you/me/we/some of us don't care about the animals it's with absolute certainty that someone else does. If it comes down to us or the animals we'll likely lose out.

                            Great reminder Dave. Thanks.

Glad I have my own pond in my front yard. Seems like nowadays all people want to do is complain about everything.
