How I added caps 3 more to my T-180

I have seen several ways of doing it and while at Radio Shack I picked up the parts to do it this way. I used 1000uf, 35v caps. I think they were under $2 a piece.

I picked up some perforated board and cut it to the length so that the 3 pas would fit. I then bent the negative leads one way and the positive the other. I then soldered the wires just long enough to solder on to the existing ESC leads. I added some 5 minute epoxy to the original caps between them and the ESC case to make sure the extra weight wouldn't bend them off. Then a little more epoxy between the new caps and the existing ones. To finish it off I added a bit of sensor safe silicone in between the caps just in case the epoxy failed. Took me about 15 minutes to do. The only thing left to do is to add waterproofing in the form of plastic dip or liquid tape to the underside of the perforated board.

Out of curiosity what value are the original caps? They are wired all in parralel right?
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

I used the same caps but the package did not say "low ESR" and the clerk was no help. Steven now sells the Rubycon low esr

That is nice soldering. So adding more caps helps the esc from voltage spikes? Maybe 50v 1000uf low esr Rubycon would be more helpful for the esc.I think I read it on the forum from here.I will add some to mine. Thanks guys...

I had a spare Etti cap board & used it on the T-180 for my Insane 34" mono. Insulated the bottom of the board with some G-10, soldered & epoxied the power wires & on top & it just fits under the hatch. Just another way to "skin the cat" (oops, Mono)

noob question . Would 1 larger capacity capacitor handle the loads and heat better then several small ones perhaps mounted remote of the ESC?
i only have a very basic understanding of electronics so this may be a dumb question

Caps need to be as close to esc as possible .

I don't know if these are low ESR ether, but I can tell you they helped. Specially running the 2650 in the Geico. If I feel the need to get the low ESR ones it's easy to remove these and add those on a new board.

What is the first sign that extra caps are needed other than seeing the original ones swelling etc.?

If your stock caps get too hot; let's say over 150 degrees - either from a fairly agressive setup, a lot of on/off running, or prop bouncing in & out of the water, or long run times where the heat buildup is cumulative, extra caps take the excess load off the stock caps and the SC.

i picked up a couple a while ago, but wasn't sure if they would be good for our application. These are electrolytic, which i don't really know what that means but i thought it had something to do with the material the cap is made from.

So i could add a couple of these to my T 120 and push it a little harder with getting on and off the throttle ?

Those are the ones I added to mine and it helped. I can tell you first hand that my caps don't get as hot as before. Maybe the Rubicons will help more but for me those are good.

                              Hello Guys,

-more smaller caps will work better than one big one, eg. 4x 220µF can be better than 1x 1000µF cap
-keep the wire lenght between caps and ESC's as short as possible
-try to use low ESR caps, like Rubycon ZL or even better Rubycon ZLH

@ Scoota: Very nice, did the same on my 180's. Did you also have some troubles with the original solder on the circuit board? It took me some effort to solder them nicely together.

                              Best regards,
                              Manuel
