Does racing a FE boat take less driving skill than racing a nitro/gas boat?

As someone whose racing pedigree is still very much in the "learning" part of the curve, I've picked up some good info here on mill lap procedures ( I know I'm straying a little off topic here, but please bear). I spectate a lot of gas & nitro heats and combined with some FE racing experience realize that ( to paraphrase a post here) winning often is determined in large part before the buzzer. I'm still one of the clueless ones who has lots of confusion on mill lap tactics. I just kind of fake it before the buzzer. To that extent I've suggested several times, to no avail, that a "How to Race" clinic be available. I think something like that could help attract those on the fence about getting into racing and not jump in because of the fear of not knowing enough. Not only was I once one, but I've seen budding potential racers observe quizically the rather technical aspects of the race start as well as how to complete the laps in decent shape and hold back on getting involved. If I only knew enough, I'd do a clinic myself to attract more guys into the fold to grow (in this case) FE race participation.

And while I'm blabbing on here, I'll say that at a WW race a few years ago, there was a class ( I think LSO) that did the LeMans start. I loved it. A real drag race to turn one. I'd like to see more of these

Still faking it but getting better at it,

    Tony

And apologies for straying off topic

I cherish the thought ! ( Tunnels are my most fun, but challenging ride - except for my chopper of course )

There two major advantages to racing IC boats over FE. First, here in San Diego, the only boat pond is the Model Boat Basin in Mission Bay. Problem is: SALTWATER. FEs & saltwater don't mix well at all. If you have a 60+ FE roll over or crash POOF!!! Everything gone in a second. Second, while we have a number of lakes in this area NO ONE likes the noise that gassers make & have closed most lakes to ALL RC boats because of complaints from neighbors & treehuggers about noisy Nitros & gassers. Noise complaints closed all but one of the full sized drag strips in CA. Even at the MBB, the tourists and owners of the Vacation Isle Hotel next to it have tried to shut it down to nitros/gassers for years years. I've beel lucky so far running my FEs at few local lakes - with the permission of park rangers. But all it would take is one gasser/nitro to screw it up for everyone. If we don't keep the noise down & keep irritating the locals we'll loose everything we love about RC boating. JIM

Douggie, I'm with you on that. NAMBA does have provisions for Le Mans starts, and we did them in AZ a few years ago : the pit guys hold the boats on the shoreline while the clock counts down, and ZOOM !! A big drag race into the first turn. I loved it, and liked the idea of propping for the launch. Fun, fun
