Looking for setup for 36" cat

    Hello,

I'm building a 36" cat (woodbuilding from plans) and I'm looking for a good setup.
I'm totally new in this powerboating area (been building sailing boats before) and I am confused about all the different aspects when selecting a proper motor setup.

First, let me say I already own a Turnigy Marine 180A ESC.

    In short, my questions:

    1) what motor should I use? Inrunner/outrunner/what KV ?
    2) how much LiPo cells?
    3) what prop?

I'm currently looking into the Leopard motor line, model 4074. I see they come in different KV ranges, from 1050KV to 2200KV.
What is a good RPM range for a cat? (with load/no load?) I was told between 30.000 and 35.000 rpm under load was good.
That would equal about 37.000 to 40.000 rpm with no load correct?

Then, what is the best choice: lower LiPo cells count in combination with a high KV motor or more LiPo cells in combination with a lower KV motor?
I can get 32.500 rpm from a 2200kv on 4 cells, but I can also get 31.000 rpm from a 1400kv on 6 cells. What would be better? Do I understand correct that a lower kv motor on a higher number of LiPo cells would pull less amps from my ESC, and is therefore gentlier for the ESC?

The easily balance my boat, I would go with 2 battery packs (1 in each sponson) in series, so should I go with either 2x 2C Lipo or 2x 3C Lipo?

Would the Leopard 4074 - 1774KV on 6C be a good choice for this kind of boat?

    I know - lot's of question's... but I'm learning!

    Thanks!

If it were me I'd set it up with 6S and a Leopard 4082/1250 motor. The Turnigy180 is marginal but should work. For packs, get a minimum of 40C/5000 mAh cells. (6S2P would be better being more gentle on the ESC and giving longer run times, but it is more expensive.) 4S is not enough for this size hull if you want much speed, 6S can give more power at lower amps. Start with an x450 prop.

I run a similar setup in my 34.5" cat (Neu motor and 6S2P) and run in the low 60s with a larger prop.
