    GPS Unit for Speed Question

Seems like the Garmin Etrex GPS is favored to get speed probably because of its price around of $50-60 on Ebay. Has any one tried using the small cheap Tom Tom or Garmin units to get a max speed reading?

Seems like if it would work you could get dual use out of one, A Nav unit for the car and Max speed unit for the boat.
