how long can a esc last?

maybe its a dumb question but ive been curious. if an esc doesn't burn, how long can it last? whats the longest one has owned a speed controller without burning it? repairs can count!
If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?

They have much simpler principle of work, so yes, they're more robust.

Very difficult question to answer from several aspects. Since heat is the primary enemy of most electronics and our ESC are quite capable of generating huge amounts of such heat, those ESC that have a decent heat removal capability and or have been sized according to an acceptable capacity useage will be the ones offering the user the greatest lifespan. Since heat degrades the individual components at different rates the weakest device will be the one that renders its lifespan the shortest. Also an important factor is repeated use at a certain level. Nothing lasts forever.

Typically the better the design, cost of engineering and quality of components, the longer the product will survive.

I have been using seaking 180a for more than a year, last tuesday my boat crash and it nearly sank only the nose floated for about 5 mins before I retrieve it, thought the esc shorted but after I dried it, its works fine. Now I seal with silicone glue so the water doesn't goes in again.

Are we talking about only boat esc's or esc's in general. I have an a couple old Novak's that is around 17 years old and still works. I've only been boating about three years and I have two that still works that I got when I first started.

I have a Hacker 77 ESC (brushless) that I have had for more years than I can remember.

It will last forever, I guess.

I allso have an old Novak ESC (brushed) aproximately 20 years old, still going strong.
